SEHMI SOARS HIGH AT KENGEN GOLF DAY

Haki Sehmi is the winner of the annual KenGen Golf Day played at the Sigona Golf Club over the weekend. The handicap-11 golfer, was on top form posting scores of 19 stable ford points on the opening nine ad 21 points on the closing nine for a total of 40 points.

Sehmi opened his scoring with back to back pars through the first four holes, before dropping a shot on the long par-three fifth and another on the dogleg left seventh, the toughest hole on the golf course.

On the closing nine, Sehmi upped his game, dropping just two strokes on the par-3 11th, which now boasts a beautiful water feature to the front and to the right of the undulating green.

Speaking after his round, Sehmi said his swing was now back. “I have had some swing problems in the last few weeks, but now I am hitting the ball better and hence my score,” Sehmi said. “I hope I will be able to defend this victory next year.”

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, KenGen CEO Eddy Njoroge said that sports was a deliberate agenda at KenGen. “Unfortunately, at KenGen we cannot sample our product to our clients! Nevertheless, these kind of sports sponsorships allow us to interact with our clients and they give us an opportunity to give back to the community that works with us, that consumes our product,” Njoroge commented. “KenGen is making every effort to produce energy more efficiently and in a manner that is friendly to the environment.”

Bhachu Singh, playing off handicap-15 was the day’s runner up with 39 points. Singh returned scores of 19 and 20 stable ford points to lose out by a single stroke.

Majur Shah was third with 38 points whilst Jane Njau was the lady winner with 36 points. The prizes for the first and second nine went to Akif Butt and Mohamed Samji whilst the longest drive for men wen to Ritesh Shah who unleashed a massive 320-yard drive down the middle of the fairway on the par-4 16th hole.

The nearest to the pin prize went to John Ndichu who missed a hole-in-one by a whisker on the uphill par-3 third hole.

The staff winner was KenGen’s Sammy Ndungu on 33 points, winning by one-point over Bethwel Ogwanjo. John Odhiambo was the guest winner with 34 points whilst Peter Musango was the runner up with 33 points. KENYA’S GOLF TEAM TO THE AFRICA AMATEUR GOLF TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP RECEIVES NATIONAL FLAG AND CASH AWARD AHEAD OF EVENT

Kenya’s amateur golf team will leave this weekend for Johannesburg, South Africa to participate in the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship (AAGTC) to be staged at the Lake Club Benoni.

The team of Vet Lab’s Matthew Omondi, Golf Park’s duo of David Opati and Joseph Karanja will join South African based Stefan Andersen in the bi-annual AAGTC where they will face Africa’s top golfers from over 19 other African states. The AAGTC, a 72-hole Championship will tee off on Tuesday the 18th of October and conclude on Friday the 21st of October 2011.

Presenting the Kenyan Flag to the team, the Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs, Hon. Paul Otuoma congratulated the Kenya Golf Union for great leadership.

“The KGU has continued to work in a transparent and efficient manner and this is reflected in the success of the national golf team,” Otuoma said. “At the 2009 AAGC held in Cairo, Egypt, Kenya finished second to South Africa; this year, I expect the team to come back with the trophy.”

Accepting the flag on behalf of the team, KGU Chairman Mwaniki Gachoka thanked the Minister for supporting the game of golf. “Golf is now an Olympic Sport and in Kenya we have continued to demystify the game and to encourage more young people to learn and play the game of golf,” Gachoka said. “As we fly to South Africa, our aim will be singular, to win the 2011 AAGTC.”

At the same ceremony, NIC Bank Group Managing Director Mr. James Macharia, presented the KGU with a sponsorship cheque of Sh300,000 for participation in the AAGTC.

“NIC Bank is happy to present the team to South Africa with this sponsorship of Sh300,000 and travel insurance cover of $200,000 per person for the trip,” Macharia said. “NIC Bank takes pride in promoting sports particularly nurturing amateurs in the golfing industry. At NIC it is our intention to ensure the
Kenyan delegation to South Africa enjoys peace of mind that comes with being covered financially.”
