Young Hapan of handicap 26, fired anoutstanding 42 stable-ford points to come out tops at the Misitu Golf Dayhosted by par-72 Sigona Golf Club Saturday.

In a tournament that was hotly contested,junior golfer Kais Khan playing off handicap 28 managed 41 stable-ford pointsbut was beaten on count back by veteran Ted Macharia, settling for third.

“Third position is good enough but nexttime I am aiming for the jackpot,” said Khan, a year-8 student at KentonCollege Preparatory School. His brother Imran Khan wasn’t as lucky as he posted37 points to slide down to 6th position. The two Khans are the sonsof veteran Rashid Khan, also a member of Sigona.

In fourth position was R K Shah with 41stable-ford points. Shah was in top form but lost on count-back to the youngKhan. Coming in fifth was Pritesh Bhimjiani with 37 stable-ford points followedby Imran Khan at sixth.

M Muhire emerged best guest player with 37stable-ford points.

The 17-event Misitu Golf Series is in itssecond season and is an initiative of the Kenya Forestry Service andco-sponsored by KenGen. The series aims at facilitating dialogue about treeconservation amongst the golfing fraternity.

Misitu Golf Series now moves to Nyali on November 19.

GAKIRIA WINS KENYA AIRWAYS EVENT IN MUTHAIGA

Home player Sam Gakiria defeated a large field of about 198 players to emerge the overall winner of the Kenya Airways Golf Safari at the Muthaiga Golf Club on Sunday.

Gakiria playing off handicap 14 amassed a total of 38 points (16, 22) to beat his closest challengers on count back and in the process scooped the overall winner’s prize of a return air ticket of two to Zanzibar.

David Mwita playing off handicap 17 was the men winner on 38 points (17, 21), while handicap 12 David Ngugi finished as the men runner-up on 38 points (17, 21) and veteran Kumar Dhall playing off handicap two finished in the third position also with 38 points (18, 20).

Stellah Macharia playing off handicap 18 won the ladies prize with a score of 35 points (16, 19), while 10 years old Mutahi Kagwe playing off handicap 28 registered the best score of the day to lift the junior prize. Kagwe played a round of 41 points (20, 21).

Evans Vitisia won the gross prize on 75 gross while handicap 16 Larry Ngala was the guest winner on 35 points (16, 19).

Meanwhile, Philip Shiharsy beat a large field of seasoned North Rift golfers to emerge the winner of the Safaricom Business Golf Challenge seventh qualifying round at the par 73 Kitale Golf Club over the weekend.

The event, which attracted a total of 100 golfers from Eldoret and Kitale, saw Philip return a gross score of 71 points and a net score of 41 points to qualify for the grand finale scheduled for April at Vipingo Ridge Golf
