THIKA HOSTS 140 PLAYERS FOR SIXTH BARCLAYS GOLF CIRCUIT

The Barclays Golf Circuit makes a second stop in Kiambu County, this time at the par 72 Thika Golf Club course on Saturday. The inaugural tourney that was hosted in Limuru in July.

The tourney comes two weeks after a successful tour in the Lakeside city of Kisumu where home boy Ramesh Karia playing off handicap 15 posted 38 stableford points to lead a group of 12 qualifiers from Nyanza, Kakamega, Nandi, Kericho and Kisii to next year’s Barclays Kenya Open golf tourney.

The sixth series of the Barclays Golf circuit is expected to attract over 140 players drawn from the host club and a sizable number from neighboring clubs like Ruiru and Kiambu.

Thika captain, Patrick Gakuo said: “As a club we are proud to host the Barclays Golf circuit because it is a tourney that provides a platform for our members to not only compete and network with their industry peers but also ensure that they are involved in supporting noble causes in our communities.”

He added: “The course is currently in good condition though the greens are slightly dry due to the prevailing weather condition.”

Barclays is working with Kenya Golf Union to raise resources throughout the circuit that will go towards supporting charitable initiatives that enhance the livelihoods of communities through financial literacy, enterprise skills and life skills.

Commenting on the weekend tourney, Barclays Bank of Kenya Managing Director Jeremy Awori said, “The pro-am is a dream for any amateur Golfer where they get an opportunity to play with top European professionals that grace the Barclays Kenya Open. Courtesy of Barclays Hospitality, they will also all get season tickets and VIP guest passes to the Barclays Hospitality Tent at the 2014 Barclays Kenya Open.”

From Thika, the action will move to Sigona Country Club on October 26 to be followed with Nyali Golf Club on November 9 before coming to Windsor Golf County Club on November 22 for the Barclays CSR Golf. The grand finale will be in Karen Golf Club on February 22.

KARIA WINS FIFTH LEG OF BARCLAYS GOLF CIRCUIT AT NYANZA CLUB

Nyanza’s Ramesh Karia posted 38 stableford points to lead a group of 12 qualifiers after the fifth leg of the ongoing Barclays Golf Circuit held at the par 70 nine hole Nyanza Golf Clubs at the weekend.
Karia playing off handicap 15 posted pars on the par three hole four, par four hole six, and par four hole nine for a first nine total of 19 points. In the second nine, he posted pars on the par four eleventh hole, par three 13th and par four 15th for a score of 19.
“Today was my day. I gave not been playing good golf of late and I am actually shocked by this achievement,” said Karia.
He added: “I used to play well sometime back but my golf form dipped and by winning the fifth leg of the Barclays Golf Circuit, I believe I’m recovering my form and I plan to carry the same form to the Grand Finale at Karen Golf and Country Club in February.”
Maurice Oduor enjoying his home course settled for the runner-up position in the day long competition, after posting 37 stableford points.
Prashant Thakrar beat Kericho’s D. Hunjan and home player Geoffrey Obuon on a back-to-back countback to secure the third position on 36 points (16, 20). Hunjan was fourth on 36 points (17, 19), while Obuon was fifth on 36 points (20, 16).

Barclays Consumer Banking director Zahid Mustapha continued his dominance in the staff category, making it four wins out of five competitions. This time, the handicap 24 player garnered 38 points,
while Paul Otieno won the guest prize on 34 points and David Biegon was the guest runner-up on 28 points.
Betty Bisonga was the lady winner on 36 points, while Martha Okelo finished as the runner-up in the category.
Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, Tony Mulisa, the Barclays Director of Treasury Business said he was happy with the large turn-out of players brought from Kisii, Kakamega, Mumias, Kericho, Nandi Bears and the home club.
“Today’s event was a difficult one and participants need a part in the back. We would also like to take this opportunity to roll out prestige banking portfolio, which has unsecured loan facility of up to Sh4 million and a secured loan facility of up to Sh7 million,” said Mulisa.
He added: “The Barclays Golf Circuit is a tournament that we hold dear as Barclays, not only because of the brand association but also the role that this tournament has played in nurturing golf talent in the
country. This was evident from the exemplary performance of last editions Barclays circuit finalists during the premier Barclays Kenya Open tournament.”
The overall winner during the grand finale will land a fully paid golfing tour on the expansive golf courses in South Africa, while the top 20 at the finale will get slots to play at next year’s Barclays Kenya Open Golf Pro Am.
From Nyanza, the Circuit action will move to Thika Sports Club on October 12 for the sixth leg.
