Watson Burugu resisted a stiff challenge to beat a large field of 186 golfers and emerge the men winner during the sixth leg of the ongoing Barclays Golf Circuit held at the par 72 Thika Sports Club at the weekend.
The feat also guaranteed Burugu a ticket to the Circuit’s grand finale to be held at the Karen Golf and Country Club in February. He will lead nine other qualifiers from the leg to the much awaited finale.
Playing off handicap eight, Burugu posted a total of 39 stableford points to rule the roost at the daylong event. He sunk a birdie on the par three hole six and registered four pars in the first nine for a front nine score of 20 points. In the second nine, the home player
started with a birdie on the par five 10th hole and managed four pars to amass 19 points.
S. K. Warui playing off handicap 24 settled for the runner-up position on 38 points (19, 19), while handicap 17 Mathew Nyaga was third on 37 points (17, 20).
Petty Kigwe playing off handicap 19 registered the best score of the day managing 40 points (20, 20) to win the ladies prize and she was closely followed by handicap 28 Linda Kinyua who settled for the ladies runner-up position on 39 points (19, 20).
Simon Ngugi playing off handicap 12 won the junior prize on 34 points (15, 19), while handicap 28 S. Maina was the guest winner on 31 points and handicap 22 Zaheed Mustafa made it five out of six with another staff prize after scoring 35 points (21, 14).
Handicap 12 Simon Ngugi won the men’s nearest to the pin prize, while Mumbi Njuguna playing off handicap 18 won the women’s nearest to the pin prize.
The highlight of the day was, however, handicap 20 Michael Kinuthia who sunk a hole-in-one on the par three fourth hole and opted contributed to the Junior Golf Foundation after the feat.
Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, Barclays Consumer Banking director Zahid Mustapha who has been unbeaten in staff category since the tournament began, said the bank held the Barclays Golf Circuit so dearly because of the brand association and also the role that the
tournament has played in nurturing golf talent in the country.
“This was evident from the exemplary performance of last editions Barclays circuit finalists during the premier Barclays Kenya Open tournament,” said Mustapha.
The overall winner during the grand finale will land a fully paid golfing tour on the expansive golf courses in South Africa, while the top 20 at the finale will get slots to play at next year’s Barclays Kenya Open Golf Pro Am.
“The pro-am is a dream for any amateur golfer where they get an opportunity to play with mainly top European professionals that grace the Barclays Kenya Open. Courtesy of Barclays hospitality, they will also get season tickets and VIP guest passes to the Barclays Hospitality tent at the Barclays Kenya Open,” Mustafa said.
From Thika, the circuit moves to Sigona on October 26.
