On former national team player Daniel Nduva in action today during the eighth leg of the Barclays Golf Circuit at the Nyali Golf Club and Country Club. He was beaten to the Junior prize by Jeremy Wahome on countback.

A record field of 200 players teed off during the eighth leg of the ongoing Barclays Golf Circuit at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club at the weekend and by the end of the competition, there was only one winner, home player Thushara De Silva.

Playing off handicap 13, De Silva managed a score of 38 stableford points to win the daylong event that brought together players from home club Nyali, Leisure Lodge and Mombasa Golf Club.

He needed a second nine score of 20 stableford points to beat Peter Ada on count back and rule the roost. Ada playing off handicap 11 settled for the runner-up position on 38 points (21, 17) and handicap 12 Q. Samji finished third on 36 points (13, 23).

De Silva started with a par on the first hole, dropped two shorts in the second hole, a par four, then managed another par on the par three hole three. In the second nine he had a single par on the par three hole 15.

“I was on a roll today, I can say it was my day because my swing was great and my putting was also nice. On the sixth hole I only managed a single point but after that dismal performance I bounced back on the remaining holes,” said De Silva.

He added: “I want to thank Barclays Bank for sponsoring the event and hope to see them back next year so that I win another prize.”

Handicap 21 Saida Samji won the ladies prize on 35 points (15, 20) after beating handicap 13 Christine Ockotch on countback. Ockotch settled for the ladies runner-up spot on 35 points (17, 18).

Edwin Miano playing off handicap 26 won the guest prize on 33 points, while handicap 4 Jeremy Wahome was the junior winner on 35 points.

Barclays Bank’s director of compliance in East and West Africa, Laban Omangi playing off handicap 21 won the staff prize after posting 30 points, while the handicap 20 J.C. Patel was the senior winner on 32 points.

Atul Patel had the men straightest drive and Farida Saeed had the women straightest drive. The men nearest to the pin prize went to J.C. Patel and Jane Mburu won the ladies nearest to the pin.

Speaking during the prize giving, Barclays Bank Chief Finance Officer Yusuf Omar lauded the massive turn-out and said he was impressed with the scores.

The overall winner during the grand finale will land a fully paid golfing tour on the expansive golf courses in South Africa, while the top 20 at the finale will get slots to play at next year’s Barclays Kenya Open Golf Pro Am.

“The pro-am is a dream for any amateur golfer where they get an opportunity to play with mainly top European professionals that grace the Barclays Kenya Open. Courtesy of Barclays hospitality, they will also get season tickets and VIP guest passes to the Barclays Hospitality tent at the Barclays Kenya Open,” Omar said.

From Nayli, the circuit moves to Windsor Golf and Country Club on November 23 to be followed by Nyeri on November 30

The par 71 Nyali Golf and Copuntry Club will on Saturday host the eight leg of the ongoing Barclays Golf Circuit where a field of 160 players is expected to take part.

According to the club’s resident professional Kopan Timbe, players should expect a tough round going by the tough conditions at the course at the moment, but he promised fans a thrilling and memorable round.

“The course is currently playing very tough especially after we prepared it in readiness of Nyali Open nest month. It will be playing long and the rough has not been trimmed so it will be a no go zone for the players,” said Timbe.

He added: “We are currently experiencing rains, so the fairway is in a great condition, but the winds are very strong and the greens are fast.”

The day long event will bring together players from home club Nyali, Leisure Lodge, Vipingo Ridge, Mombasa Club, Malindi Golf Club and Watamu Bay to battle it out for the limited tickets for the Circuit’s grand finale to the held at the Karen Golf and Country Club in February.
Saturday’s event comes two weeks after a successful tour of Sigona where home player Naveed Nanji beat a large field of 209 players to emerge the men winner on 39 points and lead a group of six qualifiers to the grand finale.

The overall winner during the grand finale will land a fully paid golfing tour on the expansive golf courses in South Africa, while the top 20 at the finale will get slots to play at next year’s Barclays Kenya Open Golf Pro Am.
