Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s David Wakhu took a single shot lead yesterday ahead of the final round of this year’s Jamii Telecom sponsored Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Masters tournament at the par 72 Karen Golf and Country Club.

Wakhu is currently on a total score of nine under par 207 (70, 67, 70) after the three rounds, with Mumias pro Dismas Indiza and Nakuru’s Richard Ainley breathing on his neck, trailing him by a single shot going into tomorrow’s final round.

During today’s round, the long hitting Royal pro posted two under par 70 to assume the lead for the first time in the competition that teed off on Tuesday.

He sunk back-to-back birdies on the par fives holes two and three, before posting a bogey on the par four eighth hole for a first nine score of 35.

In the second nine, Wakhu picked a birdie on the par four hole 10, dropped shots on the par four holes 12 and 13, then recovered with birdies on the par five holes 15 and 18 for a second nine identical score of 35.

Second round over night leader Indiza today managed a round of level par 72 for a total of eight under par 208 (69, 67, 72). The hard hitting player started well with a birdie on the par four first hole, but dropped shots on the par four holes eight and nine for a first nine score of 37.

In the second nine, he sunk a birdie on the par four hole 12, but posted a bogey on the par three hole 14, before recovering with another birdie on the par five hole 15 for a total of 35.

First round overnight leader Greg Snow who started the tournament with an impressive four under score, tumbled to position 14 after a miserable third round where he managed seven over par 79 for a total of three over par 219.

According to tournament director Elisha Kasuku, the prize money for the four round competition is Sh1 million.

Meanwhile, a large field of 168 amateur players are expected to join the professional for the Jamii Corporate Golf Day at the same venue tomorrow.

Among the amateurs to spice up the tournament are former Boston marathon winner Moses Tanui, Kenya Golf Union chairman Francis Okwara, Kenya Open Golf Limited chairman Peter Kanyago and Betty Gacheru who won the ladies straightest drive during last weekend’s Barclays grand finale at the same venue, among others.
