ALL AFRICA CHALLENGE TROPHY FUNDRAISER AT MUTHAIGA NETS KSH1.6M

With just over seven weeks to go before the flags of Africa are raised at Muthaiga Golf Club on June 8 at the Opening Ceremony of the All Africa Challenge Trophy, (AACT) the fundraising activities hit top gear last Friday (28 March).

Muthaiga hosted the second of four fundraising golf tournaments towards hosting costs of this prestigious continental ladies golf championships. Organised by the KLGU council members from Muthaiga – Liz Armitage, Lucy Muhinga and Christina Engell Andersen – a total of Shs 1.6 million was raised through sponsorship, players fees and raffle.

On the course, Hon Amos Kimunya took full advantage of local knowledge as overall winner, signing for 39 stableford points, one shot clear of George Njugu, Solomon Karanja (also Muthaiga members) and Dhru Shah all on 38 points.

The club’s ladies section also claimed top honours, lead by Lady Captain, Stella Macharia on 36 points, two ahead of Liz Wangethi as Agnes Wanjiru was third on countback 34 points.

Karen Country Club will host the next AACT fundraiser on Friday, 11 April with the last event heading upcountry to Nakuru on 13 April. Vet Lab hosted the first event in January.

The AACT is a biennial event hosted rotationally on the continent, it was last held in Botswana in 2012. First played in Harare in 1992, Kenya hosted the second event at Muthaiga, twenty years ago. It has the support of the Royal and Ancient Club of St Andrew’s (R&A).

Each country is represented by three players and a non-playing captain. Using Eishenhower scoring, the best two scores per round count towards the daily team score in the 54-hole strokeplay format to decide the winning team. KGU NAME FINAL SQUAD FOR AFRICA ZONE VI EVENT

Kenya Golf Union today named the team that will represent Kenya in the forthcoming AFRICA ZONE VI 2014 Event to be held from 14th to 17th April in Denonvale Golf   Club in South Africa.

While announcing the team the Chairman, Kenya Golf Union, Mr. Frank Okwara noted that that the team is comprised of a mix between juniors and senior players. The chairman said that by selecting juniors, it is a bold move and one of the steps aimed to preparing an Olympic squad in 2016.

The Zone VI event remains one of the most prestigious golf competitions in Africa. It was first played In Gaborone in February 1982 between countries in Africa Zone VI region. Competing countries include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Namibia. South Africa were allowed to play Zone VI in 1993 In Namibia but in 1994 had to wait until the elections were done but later participated Kenya in 1995. The format involves 4 rounds of golf with singles, foursomes, four ball better ball and final singles. Each country has eight players and a reserve.

Last year Kenya finished in 4th  after South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

The Team to AFRICA ZONE VI 2014 will be led by Head of Delegation Mr. Francis Okwara- Chairman, Mr. Peter Warui -Tournament Director, Andrew Chelogoi (Team Manager) and will be accompanied by the team coach Mr. Anil Shah

It will consist of the following:

2.      Mr. Jay Sandhu – Royal

3.      Mr. Justus Madoya – GRV

4.      Mr. Tony Omuli- Golf Park

5.      Mr. Erick Ooko- Royal

6.      Mr. Mohit Mediratta (Already has a South Africa)- Sigona

7.      Mr. Daniel Nduva ( Nyali- Junior)

8.      Mr. Mathew Wahome- (Nyali- Junior)
