Kenya Golf Union (KGU) yesterday named a strong provisional national team of 10 players to represent the country at this year’s Africa Zone VI championships slated for Denonvale Golf Club in South Africa between April 14 and 17.

According to KGU chairman Frank Okwara, there will be a 72 holes qualifying competition to be played at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club today and tomorrow, where the best five players will automatically be picked to represent the country at the high profile championships which Kenya has only won once in history.

The five will be joined by three junior players expected to be selected by the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF).

The provisional team is made up of very strong players and we are confident that the ultimate team will for sure raise the Kenyan flag high at the event. We are priotising Junior Golf Development hence the inclusion of juniors in the squad,” said Okwara.

The provisional team is made up of Limuru’s John Karichu who is also the reigning golfer of the year, Golf Park’s Tony Omuli, the Vet Lab duo of Robinson Owiti and Nelson Simwa, Justus Madoya of Great Rift Valley Lodge, Kericho’s Elijah Odera Amukowa, Alfred Nandwa of Railway, Kiambu’s Steve Karanja, and Royal’s duo of Erick Oooko and Jay Sandhu.

The gender battle that was shrouding the Limuru Golf Club ended Wednesday when a constitutional court criticised the male-dominated board of governors for attempting to sideline their women counterparts.

According to the Daily Nation Justice Mumbi Ngugi declared a proposed bylaw that was to bar women from voting illegal.

She said private members’ clubs, businesses and individuals were bound by the constitution.

She has also ordered the club directors to pay cost of the litigation individually.

The judge ordered three lady golfers who had been kicked out reinstated.

“The case arose out of the unconstitutionality of the proposed bylaw which is now rendered void and thereby all processes that followed quashed,” she said.

The judge observed that the bylaw expressed discriminated against, and violated fundamental rights of expression as it was restricting a certain section of its club membership.

“A resolution to exclude female members in the golf committee was null and void,” the judge said and ordered that the expelled members be reinstated with all the attendant benefits.”
