Njuguna Ngugi of Railway Club follows his tee shot today during the first round of the PGK Golf Tour second leg at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club. He has an early lead at the event.

Kenya Railway Golf Club’s Njuguna Ngugi recovered from the weekend’s disastrous performance in the Rwanda Open in Kigali, to take an early lead in the second of the 2014 KCB Golf Tour at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club course today.

The long hitting professional who shot 26 over par at the dry Kigali Golf Club course yesterday shot three under par 69 at Royal despite the slow greens to lead by a shot from Mumias Golf Club’s Dismas Indiza, Nicholas Rokoine from Muthaiga and Nyanza Golf Club’s David Odhiambo who all shot two under par 70 in the opening round of the one million shillings event. “Playing here was like playing at Augusta compare to where we were during the weekend. The course at Kigali was terrible, the greens were slow but hard’’ said Ngugi started the round with a bogey at the rather straight par four-first. He however put that bogey behind him, after rolling in an eagle putt at the par five-second which was followed by four birdies, three of them at the back nine.  “I three putted at the ninth and 10th where I should have made pars easily’’ added Ngugi. Indiza birdied the second, seventh and 15th and dropped a shot at the fifth while Odhiambo also eagled the second, made birdies at the seventh and 15th both par fives, but dropped two shots including the first hole and 18th while Rokoine birdied the second, eighth, ninth and 16th and bogeyed the 11th and 14th.  The three were a shot better than Vet Lab’s Brian Njoroge on one under par 71 and finishing level par 72 was Royal Nairobi’s David Wakhu. A total of 33 professionals turned up at Royal for the first round.  The second round where the top 20 pros will proceed to the last two rounds is on this morning from 8.30am.
