Former golfer of the year Nelson Mudanyi who recently turned pro tied on the top of the leader board after the first round of a three-day PGK Pro Am competition going on at the nine-hole Railway Golf Club.

The duo shot one under par 69 to carry a slim single shot lead going into the second round where more action is guaranteed.

Nakuru based Richard Ainley played level par to stay in the third overnight spot and predicted a close contest in the tournament. The event has a prize money of Ksh400, 000 at stake.
Amateurs also gave a good account of themselves in yesterday’s play with three of them occupying the top 10 slots.
National team players Mathew Omondi and Nelson Simwa both of Vet Lab played one over yesterday to wrap up Day one play jointly 4th along with Rizwan Charania.
Last year’s golfer of the year winner J. W. Karanja proved he’s got quite some nerve when he shot two over to settle for a joint seventh place with Golf Park’s resident pro Jacob Okello. Round 2 continues today.
The event is part of the preparation process for top Kenyan pros and amateurs ahead of the 2013 Barclays Kenya Open.
The event is also set to offer cash incentives to the pros who are playing for a total of Ksh 2 million with the winner getting Ksh 400, 000.
According to PGK sources, there is an appearance fee of Ksh 10, 000 per pro.  In addition to prize money, senior pros will be given a prize for winning in their category.

A total of 36 local professional golfers will be rubbing shoulders at the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) Pro Am event to be held at the nine hole Railway Golf Club from Thursday to Saturday.

According to Charan Thethy, the immediate former PGK Chairman and the coordinator of the tournament, the three days event has been sponsored by friends of Kenya Railways Golf Club and Salmer Fitness Centre and that it was expected to act as a build up for the local pros ahead of February’s Kenya Open Golf Championships.

“The pros will be playing for a total of Ksh2 million with the overall winner set to walk away with Ksh400, 000. There is an appearance fee of Ksh10, 000 per player in addition to the prize money so no player would go away with nothing,” said Charania.

He added: “Tournament sponsors have also invited the top 10 amateurs going by the Golfer Of The Year rankings and they will play alongside the professionals.”

The event is expected to be an acid test for James Karanja who turned professional in style by winning the Mumias Golf Series tournament in his first event as a professional. Other players who will be in action are this season’s Order of Merit winner Nicholas Rokoine, Nelson Mudanyi who turned professional recently after returning from a golf course in United States of America and Dismas Indiza among others. maillot de foot pas cher maillot de foot pas cher
