ONYANGO, CIANO HEADED TO SUN CITY FOR THE SANLAM CANCER CHALLENGE AFTER WINNING PAN AFRICA LIFE FINALE

Nyanza’s Samuel Onyango and Nyali’s Jonathan Ciano are the winners of the Pan Africa Life Cancer Challenge Grand Finale. Onyango and Ciano will now represent Kenya and Pan Africa Life at the Sanlam Cancer Challenge at the Sun City Golf Resort from the 20th to 21st October 2014 where they will join other golfers in raising funds for the fight against cancer.

Jonathan Ciano, a handicap-10 golfer, posted a total score of 38 stableford points to claim his place on the all expenses paid trip to the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. Ciano was on top form motivated by his good knowledge of the Karen course after winning the SAP Corporate Golf last weekend. He played level par on the par 3 5th hole after dropping six shots in the previous four holes, he went to bogey on the par four 6th hole. Pars on holes 7th to 9th gave him the boost he needed to return a score of 16 points on the front nine. In the second nine, he opened with playing back-to-back pars on 11th-13th holes, dropped two shots on par four 12th hole and par three 16th hole, before sinking a birdie on par five 15th hole. He leveled pars on 14th, 17th and 18th holes for a back nine impressive score of 22 points.

Samuel Onyango, a handicap-20 golfer and Nyanza’s Vice Captain qualified for the Grand Finale from Nyanza Club said he was pleased with his round. He returned 1 birdie, 5 pars, 5 bogeys, 2 Double Bogeys and scratched on three holes for 18 points on each nine respectively to also secure the all expenses paid ticket. Speaking after her round, Onyango said he was looking forward to the Sun City trip. “I thank Pan Africa Life for inviting me to participate at the Grand Finale; I promise to represent them well at the Sanlam Cancer Challenge in Sun City.”  

Congratulating the winners, Stephen Kamanda, the Pan Africa Life Acting CE, said that Samuel Onyango and Jonathan Ciano would join other golfers from South Africa at the Sanlam Cancer Challenge in October. “Our winners will be travelling to the Sun City Golf Resort where they will participate in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, from the 20th to 21st October,” he said. “I trust that Onyango and Ciano will be good ambassadors for Pan Africa Life, a member of the Sanlam Group, and that they will be even better ambassadors for Kenya.”

Tom Gitogo, the Pan Africa Life Outgoing CEO produced the round of his life to claim the staff prize with 31 points. “I played well, it was one of my better rounds to date,” he said. “I congratulate the winners who will be travelling to the Sanlam Cancer Challenge in October. “  He also appreciated the gesture by the partners who came on board to join them in the worthy course.The objective of this initiative came together with like minded organizations to increase awareness, promote early detection and cheaper treatment and therefore increase survival chances. The golf series reached out to over 4000 Kenyans from across the country.

P. Chetty was the men winner with 36 points and Linus Kowiti was the Men runner up with 35 points. Susan Gichuki was the Lady winner while Josephine Kaime was runner up and also claimed the lady longest drive prize.

The nines went to Martin Kimeu, 23 points and M. Githinji with 21 points. Grace Gachoka and David Githaiga claimed the Nearest to the pin.

The Team Winners were Martin Kimeu, Martin Nderi, Elijah Runo and Balden Singh  with best of three score of 101 points. The prize for best effort went to Dennis Njenga, a new up-coming golfer.

The golf series, was held across six towns around the country, it featured free cancer screening clinics to different communities a day before each golf event and aimed at raising awareness among Kenyans who would otherwise not have the free cancer screening opportunity.Through the golf tournaments, Kenyans from all walks of life got the opportunity to get free professional Cervical, prostate and breast cancer consultation and screening services free of charge.

CIANO WINS SAP GOLF DAY AT KAREN

Muthaiga Golf Club member, Jonathan Ciano, a handicap-10 golfer, played the golf of his life to emerge victorious at the 4th Annual SAP Corporate Golf Day held at the Karen Golf Club. With this victory, Ciano won a fully paid golf trip to the Gary Player Invitation at Sun City in South Africa.

Playing in calm conditions, Ciano fired up the front nine, posting an impressive 1-over par gross score. He returned 1 birdie, 13 pars and 4 bogeys, “I have played golf at Karen for many years and this was the golf of my life,” Ciano commented after his round. “I must thank SAP for inviting me to this event, it was very well organized.” On the back nine, Ciano posted a 2-over par gross score for a total of 43 points. “I look forward to mingling with the world’s top stars at the Gary Player Invitation and the prospect of playing at the Lost City Golf Course is exciting,” Ciano added. “This is definitely the best golf prize I have  won, perhaps the best I may ever win.”

Congratulating the winner, SAP’s Managing Director Eastern Africa, Andrew Waititu said SAP was honored to have hosted the golfers. “SAP has held corporate golf days for the last three years and we are honored to have had such an exclusive group of golfers,” Waititu said. “I would like to congratulate the winners, well done, this golf course may be in pristine condition but it is a very tough and challenging golf course; so well done to the winners.”

SRS Manian playing off a handicap-22 claimed the Men Winner prize with a commendable 42 points. Men Runner- up winner was handicap Suresh Parmar who managed 40 points while men third went to Sam Mwai with 39 points.

Grace Gichuki finished as the Lady winner with 38 points, Betty Gacheru was Lady runner up with 33 points. The nines went to Benoit Raymakers, 23 points and Moses Kiboi 21 points. The longest drive for ladies was claimed by Muthoni Muturi whilst John Plant was the longest drive men winner. Anthony Getambu claimed the Nearest to the pin and Anthony Waititu was the Staff winner with 31 points.

The Team Winners, playing with the dreaded “SAP Yellow Ball” were Citibank’s Moses Kiboi, David Tyrrell and Simon Njunge with 39 points whilst the team of Peter Wambugu, John Muiruri, Amos Ngonjo and Kingori Kariuki were the runners-up with 35 points.
