Defending champion Brian Njoroge beat Windsor’s Riz Charania in the third hole of a sudden death play- off at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course Mombasa, to retain the KCB Golf Tour grand finale title today.

The two had tied on level par total of 284 at the end of regulation time. Njoroge who started the final round a shot better than Charania and two shots clear of Sigona’s John Wangai, fired three over par 74, a round which saw him drop four shots, while Charania had carded two over par 73 to force the playoff.

“I putted real bad today and did not think I actual stood any chance of winning today, but I am happy that I managed to defend the title’’ said Njoroge who bogeyed the second hole at the front nine and later at the 12^th, 13^th and 16^th and made only one birdie at the 17^th.

Charania birdied two holes but against three bogeys for. Getting into the play off was real great considering that I have not been playing serious golf lately though I must say today’s round was real tough’’ said Charania.

During the first extra hole(18^th), Charania hit the green but about 35 feet away from the pin while Njoroge fired to the left bunker. Came out poorly, but putted well for a bogey.

Charania missed a two footer for the two to move to the 13^th where they halved the hole with a par. However Njoroge managed to sink for a par the 14^th against Charania’s bogey for Njoroge to take home the top prize of Sh510,000.

Charania took the second prize of Sh420,000 plus 25.5 points towards the KCB Golf Tour Order of Merit.

“It feels great retaining the grand finale title. I have played real bad in the other events’’ added Njoroge.

Finishing third was Sigona’s John Wangai who was also on course for the title until he lost two balls on the eighth and 11^th, managed a four over par 75 and a total of 286 plus 24 points towards the Order of Merit and Sh300,000.

He Was a shot better than Mumias Sugar sponsored Dismas Indiza who also shot 75 for 287 plus 23 points.

A total of 30 out of the field of 50 had made the second round cut. Of the visiting players, Uganda’s Deo Akope shot level par 71 to tie for fifth place on 289 with Nicholas Rokoine, and Njuguna Ngugi.

Reigning champion Brian Njoroge finally pulled away from the rest of the field during today’s third round of the KCB Golf Tour Grand Finale at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course.

The Vet Lab Sports Club professional Njoroge fired an impressive three under par 68 for a three rounds total of three under par 210. Njoroge who won the 2013 event at Leisure Lodge Golf Resort in the South Coast, bogeyed the fourth hole at the front nine but against three birdies over the first, fifth and sixth, then dropped at a shot at the par three-10^th after missing the green.

He, however, made birdies at the 15^th and 17^th. “It was not a bad round, though it would have been better if I did not drop a shot at the fourth and at the 10^th which has been a thorny to me this week’’ said Njoroge who now leads the surviving field of 30 pros into tomorrow’s final round of the three million shillings event which crowns the 2014 KCB Golf Tour.

He will be in the company of Sigona’s John Wangai who shot a low six under par 30 at the front nine and one over par at the back nine for a new pro course record of 66, which is also the amateur record set by former Kenya number one Wachira Mahihu.

This saw Wangai moved from eighth place to tie for the second place with Professional Golfers Of Kenya (PGK) chairman Riz Charania who shot 67, for two under par total of 211.

An eagle three at the par five-first hole set the motion on for Wangai formerly of Railway who then made four back to back birdies from the second to the fourth, parred the rest.

But like Charania, Wangai also dropped a shot at the 10^th, 12^th, and 17^th but cancelled them with birdies at the 11^th and the par three-18^th. ‘’Played brilliantly first nine but a bad shot to the bunker at the 10^th then a three putts at the 12^th ruined what was going to be my lowest round this year’’ said Wangai.

Long hitting Dismas Indiza was a shot behind on his own in fourth place also after firing three under par 68 for 212. His round included a clean two under par that included birdies at the fifth and sixth. But bogeyed the 12^th and 13^th and birdied the 11^th, 15^th and 17^th. ‘’ It is still anybody’s race as the top four players are only separated by a shot and two shots, we will see how it goes tomorrow’’ said Indiza. Joint leader in the second round Njuguna Ngugi dropped to joint sixth place with home pro Kopan Timbe, and Uganda’s Deo Akope.

Ngugi shot five over par 76 for 218, a shot better than Muthaiga’s Nicholas Rokoine and day one leader Stefan Andersen sank further behind in 10^th place after a 76 while Royal’s Eric Ooko jumped from 23^rd to 11^th after a 69 and the remaining amateur Agil Is-Haq carded one over par 72 to move from 18^th to 13^th place. The pros will be joined by a field of 150 amateurs in the final round.
