Nyali golfer Joseph Oluoch soared high to emerge the overall winner of the second leg of Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Golf Series held at the par 71 Nyali Golf and County Club at the weekend.

Oluoch playing off handicap six posted 18 stableford points in the first nine before carding 21 points in the back nine for a total of 39 points and in the process ruled the roost at the day long competition that had attracted a large field of 150 players.

However, J. S. Kaburu stole the show with a hole-in-one on the par three 15th hole and will now have his name added in the list of golfers who have sunk hole-in-ones on the course.

Kevin Caroll playing off handicap 28 beat handicap 14 Akram Sheikh and handicap 22 Mukesh Shaghavi on back-to-back countback to settle for the runner-up position on 38 points (17, 21). Sheikh was third also on 38 points(17, 21) and Shaghavi settled for fourth spot on 38 points (18, 20).

Jane Mburu playing off handicap 17 emerged the lady winner on 36 points (18,18), while handicap 27 Azul Ogola was the guest winner on 34 points (19, 15) and William Kaguta had the nearest to the pin. Handicap 23 Ken Mwige had the best first nine score on 23pts, while Nganga Warui posted the best second nine score on 36 points.

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, Allan Njoroge, the Company Secretary at KTB, said KTB together with its partners in the tourism industry had in the recent past put enhanced focus on the marketing of golf to both domestic and international tourists.

It is for this reason that we have this year launched the Tembea Kenya golf series that will see KTB sponsor golf events at clubs across the country. Kenya is famed worldwide for its sports prowess in the areas of athletics, rugby, just to mention but a few and it is with this spirit that KTB has taken up the promotion of sports tourism a notch higher,” said Njoroge.

He added: “At KTB we have over the last five years spent over Ksh. 40 million towards promotion of golf across the country and internationally through publication of golf publicity materials, hosting of international golf journalists on tours of our courses, holding of golf festivals and tournament sponsorship. Kenya’s main markets for golf tourism are in Europe, Middle East and Africa which have a combined eight million golfers of which at least 30 per cent take golf tours.”
