AGIL, AWUOR WIN ACCOLADES AT JUNIOR GOLF AWARDS

Agil Is Hag and Ashley Awuor are the top Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) players of year 2016 after respectively garnering 73 and 83.3 points from 10 of their best rounds in the past 12 months.

The duo finished top in the order of merit collated by the JGF after the conclusion of Royal Junior Strokeplay championships staged on Tuesday and yesterday. Agil struck a total of 214 gross over 54 holes to bag the overall gross winner’s title at Royal Nairobi Golf Club as Awuor placed 13th on the overall leaderboard and first among the girls.

Loise Akinyi, 17th overall was the second among girls at Royal but did not make the grades in JGF’s best of 2016.

Mutahi Kibugu placed second overall from 233 gross in the Royal event and, as a result, emerged gross winner of the JGF players aged 14-15 with 233 strokes over 54 holes. The youngster struck an impressive closing 76 shots in his final round, a two-shot improvement from the 79 in opening round of play and 78 in the second. Girls between ages 14 and 15 overall standings are yet to be published.

Charles Chanzu struck 216 for the overall net winner’s gong at Royal Njoroge Kiburu is the 2016 winner of JGF boys 13 years and under while the girls’ overall standings are yet to be published.

The annual JGF gala saw Brian Njoroge crowned boy player of the year in the 16-18 years category with Kellie Gachaga winning the girl’s equivalent. She also triumphed in the Royal junior strokeplay event after shooting 82,80 and 81 for a 243 gross over 54 holes.

Top Boy Player of the Year Agil said the closing event at Royal was tough but he’s glad to emerge the winner. The youngster wants golf courses to stage more age group events to help hone skills at tender ages. “I’m happy to have won today although it has been tough and full of competition from my fellow golfers who are equally good,” she said.

KENYA OPEN RETURNS TO MUTHAIGA, DATES SET

Kenya Open Golf Championships will be making a return to it’s initial home Muthaiga Golf Club after five years and it will be held between March 23 and 26, 2017.

According to Muthaiga Golf Club chairman Kairu Bachia, the modern 18-hole course has undergone tremendous upgrading that befits the status of a championship golf course.

Over the last five years when the Open was held at Karen Golf and Country Club, the management at Muthaiga has invested heavily to make sure that the club upholds its prominence as the finest course with the fastest greens in East Africa that offers a great ambiance with numerous lakes and ponds to participants’” said Bachia today.

Kairu futher pointed out facelift of greens number 3,5,11 and 17, purchasing of equipment’s and improved security within and beyond the course as compared to its previous status five years ago when it last hosted the event.

The event in its 49th edition will see a participation of 156 golfers drawn across the globe battling for the top prize of sh 3.5 million with a record attendance of over 10,000 spectators. Kenya is set to be represented by its traditional number of 26 players; 22 pros and 4 amateurs currently undergoing training at Muthaiga in preparation for the event to present a more competitive team this time round.

Meanwhile Kenya open title sponsors Barclays Bank of Kenya have announced next year’s sponsorship to the tune of sh 50 million which makes it the title sponsors for the seventh year running.

Speaking during the same event Barclays Bank of Kenya Managing Director Jeremy Awori said sponsorship is an illustration of their commitment an and dedication to the growth and development of golf in the country.
