KENYA OPEN GOLF GETS KSH5 MILLION JOHNNIE WALKER BOOST

Leading alcoholic beverage manufacturer, Kenya Breweries has today announced a Sh 5million sponsorship toward the 50th edition of Barclays Kenya Open Golf Tournament. This is the fifth year running that KBL through Johnnie Walker is sponsoring the tournament, which will take place on 23rd to 26th March 2017.

Speaking at the sponsorship announcement ceremony, KBL Sale Director, Andrew Kilonzo lauded the tournament organizers for coordinating what is arguably Kenya’s most prestigious golf tourney “To consistently attract and maintain first class standards that has made the Kenya Open Golf what it is for more than 50 years is not an easy task” said Kilonzo. He added that the legacy of longevity blends well with the Johnnie Walker brand that has been serving refreshing beverages for over 150 years.

‘’Hosting this tournament is a great honor to us as a club and in the tradition of the tournament we promise a memorable shield for both our players and guests,’’ Dr Samson Ndegwa, KOGL Sponsorship Director said. “We aim to present the best challenge year in year out and this year is no different,” added Ndegwa.

Vet Lab’s resident professional Mathew Omondi took advantage of his knowledge of home ground to take an overnight lead tied with three other participants on one under par 71 at the inaugural Emrok Golf Series at the par 72 course.

The other three are Royal Nairobi’s David Wakhu, Nelson Simwa also of Vet Lab and amateur player Mike Kisia.

Omondi sunk a birdies on the par five fifth hole, and dropped shots on the first and sixth holes for a first nine score of 37. In the second nine he he drooped two shots on the 12th and 13th holes but recovered with an albatross on the par five 14th hole and birdies on the 15th and 17th holes for a second nine score of 34.

Simwa sunk three birdies in the first nine for a score of 33, then had a birdie and a bogey in the second nine for a score of 35.

Wakhu’s round was made up of a score of 35 in the first nine after he sunk three birdies dropped two shots, while in the second nine he had a birdie and a bogey for a score of 36. Kisia also had 35 in the first nine and 36 in the second nine.

Ajay Shah of Naivasha and Mumias’ Dismas Indizatied in the fifth position on level par 72.

The series is geared towards improving the player’s performance by only awarding those with remarkable scores.

Only players with scores of two over and better after the 36 holes will get cash prizes.
