INDIZA TAKES EARLY LEAD AS OKELLO SINKS HOLE-IN-ONE IN LIMURU

Mumias player Dismas Indiza showed why he is leading the KCB Tour Order of Merit when he took an early lead at the fourth leg of the Tour at the par 72 limuru golf and Country Club yesterday.

Indiza who has won two out of three tour events this year, the Royal and Muthaiga legs, carded an impressive 2 under par 69 to take an overnight lead.

At the first nine he sunk four pars in holes 1, 2, 5 and 9 and then rolled in two birdies on holes four and eight. The long hitting player had a bogeys on holes three and six before dropping two shots on hole seven for a total score of 35 in the first nine.

In the second nine he managed to play steady shots with unwavering putts that saw him sink four birdies, leveled in three holes and dropped two shots for a score of 34.

Golf Park’s Jacob Okello spiced up the round with a hole in one on the par three seventh hole.

“I just used my 6 iron and was in an impressive form today, this shows that I am regaining my previous form, my tee shots are getting better every day. If we continue to get more of this tournaments we will be able to up our game and do better in bigger tournaments,” said Jacob Okello.

Jacob is one of the best performers Kenya has ever had in the Kenya open golf tournament having come as close as second place after losing on a sudden death playoff during the 1998 Kenya Open Golf.

“KCB has helped the professionals a great deal but we need more sponsorships and more tournaments to reach the standards of the European Tour players,” Okello said.

The KCB Advantage banking tour fourth round will have its cut today, where remaining players will enter the money bracket.

AMATEUR MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP TEE OFF AT ROYAL WITH CROWN PAINTS BOOST

This year’s Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship golf yesterday received a boost of Sh250,000 from Crown Paints Limited.

The tournament which is part of the Golfer Of The Year (GOTY) calendar, tees off this morning at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club and will end on Saturday after four rounds.

Speaking while presenting the sponsorship cheque to Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Chairman Francis Okwara, Crown paints CEO Rakesh Rao noted the important role played by the Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship in nurturing golf talent in the country.

“We are proud to be associated with this golfing event, which has produced some of the finest golfers in Kenya. This sponsorship aims at supporting golfers who do not have enough capital to take part in the championship,” said Rao.

Crown paints have been a keen supporter of golf, as they also sponsor the ongoing Teflon Greensome Challenge 2013.

Okwara thanked the sponsors for their gesture saying this year’s edition was expected to be one of the most competitive ever.

“Some of the top amateur golfers will be vying for this year’s title. If last year’s tournament is anything to go by, we expect tight competition at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club,” said Okwara.

The tournament which has always attracted top amateur golfers in the country is limited to 64 players boasting handicap 9 and better. The registry is packed and all eyes will be on defending Champion Tony Omuli as well as South Africa-based Mohit Mediratta, Great Rift Valley’s Justus Madoya and Kericho’s William Odera.

The winner of the 2013 Amateur championship , will clinch an automatic slot to play at the 2014 Kenya Open Challenge.
