This year’s Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship golf yesterday received a boost of Sh250,000 from Crown Paints Limited.

The tournament which is part of the Golfer Of The Year (GOTY) calendar, tees off this morning at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club and will end on Saturday after four rounds.

Speaking while presenting the sponsorship cheque to Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Chairman Francis Okwara, Crown paints CEO Rakesh Rao noted the important role played by the Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship in nurturing golf talent in the country.

“We are proud to be associated with this golfing event, which has produced some of the finest golfers in Kenya. This sponsorship aims at supporting golfers who do not have enough capital to take part in the championship,” said Rao.

Crown paints have been a keen supporter of golf, as they also sponsor the ongoing Teflon Greensome Challenge 2013.

Okwara thanked the sponsors for their gesture saying this year’s edition was expected to be one of the most competitive ever.

“Some of the top amateur golfers will be vying for this year’s title. If last year’s tournament is anything to go by, we expect tight competition at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club,” said Okwara.

The tournament which has always attracted top amateur golfers in the country is limited to 64 players boasting handicap 9 and better. The registry is packed and all eyes will be on defending Champion Tony Omuli as well as South Africa-based Mohit Mediratta, Great Rift Valley’s Justus Madoya and Kericho’s William Odera.

The winner of the 2013 Amateur championship , will clinch an automatic slot to play at the 2014 Kenya Open Challenge. Past winners of the Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship like Nicholas Rokoine, Brian Njoroge and Greg Snow have gone on to be some of Kenya leading professional golfers. golden goose deluxe brand golden goose deluxe brand
