For the first time, the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) has included a Golf Tourism Sub-committee among its other sub- committees. The new sub-committee which is charged with the responsibility of promoting golf tourism and marketing in Kenya will however need at least Ksh 330 Million in order to achieve its objective to get 30,000 golfing tourist to Kenya annually. The committee will partner with the Ministry of sports art and culture, the Ministry of tourism and KTB which are expected to finance the activities of the committee.

The committee headed by Tob Cohen of Muthaiga Golf Club and who is also the chairman of Tobs Kenya Golf Safaris , has already lined its main objective which is first and foremost, to get funds from the two ministries. “ In order to achieve our objectives, which is the promotion of Kenya as a unique Golf destination in the world market, and achieve a sizable market share and Promote Kenya as a superb Golf destination world-wide we will need a good budget for this’’ said Cohen.

Some of the benefits of having the Golf tourism sub- committee are that once all is put in place, the yield per tourist, the quality perception of Kenya, employment and Foreign Exchange earnings will improve.

Kenya is blessed with great golfing weather, perhaps the best in the world. In the mountain region, the famous Mount Kenya Safari Club features the only golf course in the world where the equator crosses. Moreover, there are more than ten new golf course developments’’ added Cohen.

Speaking during the launch of the sub-committee at the KGU offices at Muthaiga in the presence of KGU chairman Anthony Muhoro, Cohen said the committee will bring in hotels, airlines, local tour operators and corporates in a joint effort to elevate the profile of Kenya golf tourism. “The future definitely looks bright for golf in Kenya, with the concerted efforts of both the private sector, Ministry of Tourism, KTB and Ministry of Sports, Kenya is well positioned to harness the huge tourism potential of golf’’.
