Three prize winners Noah Winja, Ashish Shah and Lucy Muhinga will represent Kenya in the MercedesTrophy Regional Final to be held in Salzburg, Austria at the end of the month.
The trio landed the all- expenses paid trip after winning their respective divisions during the event’s national qualifiers organised by DT Dobie at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club at the weekend.
Muhinga who incidentally is the sole lady qualifier emerged the winner in division three category after defeating Lucy Njoroge on countback.
Njoroge playing off handicap 25 finished second in division three after she carded 19 in the first nine and 15 in the back nine.
Muhinja started off badly though posting 13 in the first nine but her impressive score of 21 in the second nine saw her win the division with a total of 34 stableford points.
Ashish playing off handicap 13 shot 15 in the first nine and 21 in the back nine for a total of 39.
Winja who is a handicap eight golfer won division one after posting 35 points (17, 18).
Second overall in division one was none other than the Club’s Vice Captain Kavit Bhakoo. Playing off handicap five, Bhakoo shot 16 in the first nine and 18 in the back nine for a total of 34.
Handicap eight Brigadier F. Ogolla was the first nine winner on 19 points while second nine honours went to James Koome on 22.
Nearest to the pin for men was taken by A. Khamara while the ladies’ trophy went to Mercy Wambugu.
Winja who is also the overall winner of last year’s Kenya Trophy championship had this to say after winning his division: “When I teed off in the afternoon, I never expected that I would win. In the last two holes I missed a birdie and 3 putted so the going looked scary in the latter stages but I’m glad that victory was forthcoming after all.”
The Kenya team will be captained by Willie Getata who is the DT Dobie Government and Institutional Sales Manager. They will be provided with complimentary air tickets, accommodation, green fees and ground transport during the event.
Getata said the trio will be given an opportunity to practice together prior to their departure. The team departs to Salzburg on May 29 and arrive the following day. The tournament will be played on May 31 after which they will return on June 1.
The Regional Final in Salzburg will include a “Drive to the Major” competition with golfers trying to be the closest to a marked line on a fairway. The winner will earn luxury accommodation at St. Andrews in Scotland for the Open which will be held between July 15th to 20th.
The prize will be a spot in the “Monday After event” which will be played immediately after the Open at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. The package also offers access to the Mercedes Benz hospitality area.
Finalists for the MercedesTrophy will play three rounds of tournament golf in Stuttgart, Germany at an international level and will be treated to an attractive programme of additional events. This includes visiting the Mercedes Benz Museum and historic buildings and a Mercedes Benz driving experience. mens nike air max 90 mens nike air max 90
