National golf team player Nelson Simwa has said he will be playing at the remaining Golfer Of The Year (GOTY) series events despite a statement by a senior amateur player that top amateurs could stop featuring at the Goty competitions in protest of the mode of selection for the national team.

Robinson Owiti who was the national team captain at the East African Challenge in October last year, last week questioned the criteria used by Kenya Golf Union (KGU) to pick the national for the Africa Zone VI Championships in South Africa from April 14 to 17 since the defending golfer of the year champion and reigning series leader where missing and said if the Goty was not being used to select the national team, top players will quit playing the series.

“I am a top player and I can confirm I will not quit playing the Goty series. I don’t know who were referred to as top amateurs in the statement,” said Simwa who is likely to lead the controversial team to the continental tournament where they finished joint fifth during last year’s tournament in Namibia.

He becomes the first top amateur top distance himself from quitting claims. Others have remained silent, showing signs that they could be in support of Owiti’s sentiments despite not being vocal.
