STEVE AMBULWA WINS SAFARICOM TOURNEY IN KAKAMEGA

Steve Ambulwa exhibited outstanding form when he fired an eagle three at hole ten to propel his score to a solid 43 stable ford points to clinch the third round of the Safaricom Business Golf Challenge in Kakamega Sports Club over the weekend. Playing off handicap 10, Steve overshadowed top guns as he went on to set the best score of the day beating over 47 golfers drawn from the region. The win secures him a fully paid trip to play in the grand finals at Vipingo Ridge, Mombasa on 28th April 2012.

Despite staying away from the course for one year as he was undertaking his studies, Steve who returned to the course three months ago managed to steady his initial handicap of ten but now chopped to eight.

“I played an easy beautiful game, always staying on the fairways, chipping well and my putting was dazzling. Am now looking forward to playing in the grand finals in Vipingo Ridge and who knows I might just surprise golfers there,” said an ecstatic Steve.

Steve embarked on the outward nine with a bogey followed by a par on the second, bogey on the third before sinking a birdie on the long par five hole four. He then pared the fifth, dropped a short each on the sixth and seventh, before recovering with a birdie on the eight and an easy par on the ninth to record 21 points. At the inward nine, he fired an eagle three to greatly profit with consecutive pars on the thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth for a total 22 points.

Following closely in the 1st runner-up position and also with a massive score of 41 points was Kakamega Vice Captain Innocent Ondiek. Playing off handicap 20, Ondiek rolled two birdies to combine 22 and 19 for a total 41 points to also secure himself a fully paid trip to Vipingo Ridge, Mombasa. Mumias Golf Club member Jack Oyaro sunk two birdies to collect 39 points to take home the 2nd runners-up prize of a Dell Laptop. Leah Luchivya, a member finished fourth while Long-hitter and also the Vice Chairman Logan Busolo followed at fifth position both winning a blackberry phone with Sh 5,000 airtime and Nokia phone plus Sh 5,000 airtime respectively.

K. Munyeki took home the guest trophy. The longest drive-men’s prize went to Logan Busolo while Lydia Oketch took the longest drive-ladies prize. Nearest to pin went to Gregory Ombito while James Mundia went home with an Ideos phone plus Sh 5,00 airtime for the being the best junior. In the caddie’s competition, Gabriel Makanyi won with 35 points. Safaricom Sales Manager Peter Fedha presided over the colorful prize giving. The next tournament will be staged in Thika Golf Club on the 17th September 2011. SAFARICOM BUSINESS GOLF CHALLENGE MOVES TO KAKAMEGA GOLF CLUB

The third round of the qualifying event in the Safaricom Business GolfChallenge will be happening in Kakamega Golf Club on Saturday 3rdSeptember.

The course will host over 66 golfers drawn from Kakamega Golf Club andMumias Golf Club.

The players will battle it out for the top prizes at the nine-hole course,which used to be par 72 but has been revised to par 69 for men and par 70 forwomen.

Club Captain ofthe 9-hole Kakamega Golf Club, Denis Munyendo says the rains are stillpersistent and golfers need to be ready for a bit of a challenge. “It has beenraining in the afternoons but the course is still manageable. The course is ingood condition and the golfers will definitely enjoy the challenge,” said Denis.

Denis playing offhandicap 18 will be leading some of the top golfers in Kakamega Golf Club inclaiming the top trophies and an array of prizes on offer from Safaricom.

Among the topgolfers expected to display outstanding game of golf over the weekend includeEsbon Litali playing off handicap 5, handicap 10 Steve Ambulwa, Dickson Mutokaand Logan Busolo who will be playing off handicap 11.

The home playerswill face stiff challenge from Mumias Golf Club members led by their CaptainHezron Wafula who plays off handicap 11. Joining the Captain in the battle toqualify for the grand finals will be Jack Oyaro and Gregory Ombito playing offhandicap 9.

Kakamega ClubCaptain Denis says due to the huge number of golfers, the earliest tee off willbe at 8am and the last team is expected to finish before the rains pour.

The overall winnerand 1st runner up from each qualifying event will win a fully paidtrip to play in the grand final in April 2012 at the Vipingo Golf Club inMombasa.

Among the array of prizes to be won onSaturday will be a fully loaded laptop, BlackBerry phones, Ideos phones,airtime and trophies.
