Hard hitting Mumias golfer Dismas Indiza showed why he emerged the winner in the first two legs of the ongoing KCB golf tour, when he leaped to from ninth position to end the second round of the Muthaiga leg placed second, a single shot behind home player Paul Thuo.

Indiza is now on two over par 144 after a false start on Wednesday when he played three over par 74. Today he sunk six birdies to end the par 71 course on one under par 70 and send clear signals of his intentions.

His huge leap was aided by the fact that day one leaders had a miserable round. Overnight leader Anil Shah of Royal Club, Muthaiga’s Thuo, John Wangae, Ajay Shah and Nicholas Rokoine will rue they chance to stretch the lead in the competition that saw only 15 players make the cut and enter the money bracket.

Shah played five over par 76 during today’s round, a stack contrast his first round score of three under par 68, to end the day on two over par 144.

During today’s round, Indiza who won the Royal and Nyanza legs had mixed fortunes in the first nine where he sunk four birdies on holes four, five, seven and eight but dropped shots on holes three and nine to end the first nine on two under par 34. He was unable to maintain the fine run into the second nine as he played one over par 36 for a total of one under par 70.

Thuo lost two shots today, finishing the day’s round at two over par 73 but still assumed the lead on the leader board. Thuo stands at one over par 143, a shot better than Indiza.

The Muthaiga player who turned pro in 2009 is exuding confidence following his ascendance to the top of score board and believes that concentration will be key to winning the tournament.

“I have not played such good golf for a long time, but I have been training hard and believe the results are not by fault. I intensified my training after Kenya Open but putting is still my biggest challenge,” said Thuo.

South Africa based Nelson Mudanyi, veterans Jacob Okelo, Richard Ainley, Ali Kimani and Charan Thethi were some of the major casualties who failed to make the cut.

Royal Nairobi’s Anil Shah sunk four birdies in the second nine to take an early lead after the first round of the third KCB Advantage Banking Golf tour that teed off today at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club.

Shah who ended his round on three under par 68, started brightly sinking a birdie on the par 4 hole three before dropping shots on holes five and eight to finish the first nine on one under (37). Luck swung his way in the second nine where he sunk back-to-back birdies on holes 10, 12, 13 and 18 for a three under par 31 for a total of 68.

Mumias’s Dismas Indiza who has won the last two tour events at Royal and Nyanza, found the going tough as he could only manage a three over par 74 after the first day.

Indiza cited fatigue for his poor show saying the South Africa Sunshine Tour which took place in Zambia last week took a heavy toll on him.

“The day has certainly not been well for me because of fatigue but by tomorrow I will be fine. I took part in a golf tournament in Zambia last week so the boys here have a slight advantage over me,” said Indiza who is among the favourites for the event.

Muthaiga’s Paul Thuo and John Wangae are joint second in the leader board, two shots behind Shah at one under par 70, while Nakuru’s Ajay Shah fourth on level par 71. Nicholas Rokoine of Muthaiga, Vet Lab’s Mathew Omondi who recently turned professional and Ben Simwa are tied fifth at one over par 72.

Anil Shah is confident of maintaining his lead to the final day and win the leg. He said: “I feel good about the way I played today, it’s a dream start for me so I just want to work on maintaining my composure and carry the lead into the weekend. I know you cannot win a tournament in one day but you can lose in one day so I have to take extra caution.”

Tomorrow’s round will have a cut where the top 15 players will proceed for the last two rounds where lucrative prize money is up for grabs.
