Edward Kerich used his home advantage to emerge the overall winner of the second leg of Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) Golf Circuit at the Nine-Hole Railway Golf Club at the weekend.
Kerich playing off handicap 20 resisted a stiff challenge from handicap 26 Stanley Karanja to beat a large field of 139 participants and rule the roost in the day long competition thanks to an impressive
second nine score of 20 stableford points that saw him beat Karanja on countback with a total score of 39 points (19, 20). Karanja settled for the men winner prize on 39 points (20, 19).
Handicap 19 David Bwana was the men runner-up on 38 points while F. M. Haruka playing off handicap 12 finished third on 37 points.
Shelsmith Muruguri playing off handicap 27 won the lady prize on 35 points, while handicap eight Chepchumba Chumo of Eldoret Golf Club was the lady guest winner on 22 points and Omar Lewa playing off handicap 26 won the guest prize on 40 points.
Chumo was on the podium again to pick the ladies longest drive prize, while home player K. Kaiti won the men longest drive prize while the nearest to the pin prize went to M. Mbugua. J. M. Karanja posted the best first nine score on 23 points and P. K. Macharia on the second nine prize on 20 points.
Wangui A playing off handicap seven won the lady caddies prize on 38 points, while handicap five S. Gatere won the men caddies prize on 35 points and the sponsors prize went to KVDA chairman E. S. Kona.
Speaking during the prize giving ceremony which was also attended by Marakwet East Member of Parliament James Kibowen and Speaker of National Assembly Ekwe Ethuro, KVDA Managing Director David Kimosop lauded the massive turn out of players in the event.
“It’s indeed a great privilege to be accorded this opportunity to meet and interact with this field of golfers today. It gives me a lot of pleasure to be part of this event for a worthy course,” said Kimosop.
This was the second golf tournament in the history of KVDA, the first one being held in Eldoret in May and the tournament sponsors have planned to host other circuit events in Kitale, Nakuru and Nandi Bears. pandora earrings pandora earrings

Nyali pro Kopan Timbe

Top professional golfer Kopan Timbe has urged Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) officials to loosen their stand and allow female caddies take part in the coming Coast Open Meeting that will be held in three clubs namely Leisure Lodge, Vipingo Ridge, Nyali Golf and Country and Mombasa Golf Club in August.

The first event will be held at Leisure Lodge between August 2 and 3, before action moves to Vipingo Ridge on August 5 and 6 then Nyali and Mombasa Club on August 8 and 9 respectively.

Timbe who is the resident professional at Nyali said the club had three top lady golfers who were arguably considered as the best lady golfers in the country and should be given a chance to compete in the event to sharpen their skills.

The trio are Mary Muli who won the title last year but her name was not put on the board despite being given her prize, Mary Naneu and Redempter Wayua.

“Almost all of the top pros in the country started from the caddy ranks, so these girls should also be given the opportunity to prove their mettle. For sure they are among the best lady golfers in the country and the only way of supporting lady golf is by giving such talent more events to play and not denying them a chance to play,” Timbe told Kenya Golf Guide.

He was reacting to a decision by KLGU officials to lock out the caddies from the Coastal tour.

According to one Jean Elms: “Entry forms for the four clubs set to take part in the Coast Open Meeting, will be sent to the club’s lady captains and as agreed in a meeting between the four clubs, unauthorised ladies playing in golf competitions like witnessed last year with a caddy winning the handicap trophy, called the Rose Bowl during the championship will not be allowed.”

KLGU boss Mary Wambugu also stressed that: “All players entering for all KLGU recognised competitions must not only hold a CONGU handicap but must also be a member of a club which has paid affiliation fee for the player to KLGU.”
