Uganda’s professional golfer Deo Akope has extended his overnight lead in the ongoing KCB Pro-Am golf tour grand finale at the Nyali Golf and Country Club, finishing the second round on two under par 142.

Deo carded one birdie on hole five, played seven pars and dropped a shot for a score of 36 in the front nine. In the back nine he shot one birdie but dropped shots on holes 15,16 and 18 for a score of 36.

“The pin position on holes 16 and 18 are very elusive and it’s hard to make a putt even in the shortest distance possible, but I am happy to have played two under today,” said Akope.

Muthaiga’s Greg Snow is second on a total of two over par 14 after he shot the second best score of the day, a three under par 68 to leap to second position on a day that saw only 21 professionals make the cut.

Vet Lab’s Brian Njoroge is third on three over and is strongly on course for the coveted top prize.

The cut was projected at 11 over par 153 a target that overwhelmed many participants.

The best score of the day was posted by Nyanza’s resident professional David Odhiambo who played four under par 67, catapulting him from a first day poor show to third position after the second round. He sunk a birdie on hole one, played seven pars before dropping a shot on hole eight in the front nine then sunk an inspiring four birdies and posted five pars in the back nine.

Three Ugandans and one Tanzanian Professional have also made the cut and find themselves into the money bracket.

Among the top local pros who failed to make the cut include Boniface Simwa of Eldoret Golf Club, John Wangai of Sigona and Windsor’s David Opati.

The KCB Nyali Golf Tour marks the end of the 2015 series that has seen various golfers traverse the country in pursuit of top honours.

Stan Ngure of Thika golf club shot an impressive 42 stableford points to win the Safaricom Business golf challenge held at the par 72 Thika Golf Course.

The amateur golfer shot 1 par in hole 7 and a couple of bogies for a total of 19 points in the front nine. In the back nine he played even better golf sinking one birdie in hole 16, shot three pars in the tenth, thirteenth and eighteenth for a total of 23 points in the back nine.

The handicap 26 amateur golfer was excited after winning the Safaricom business challenge in a day that saw a large field of 221 amateur golfers take to well-manicured Thika Golf course.

“It was not an easy day but my fourball was great. I had to up my tee shots whne I realized I was not getting the yardage I required for a good score mainly in the first nine” Ngure said.

For the win Ngure took home 10,000 worth of airtime, a Tab and a trophy.

Safaricom Enterprise Business Unit Head Tony Tugee said that Safaricom will continue to sponsor the golf tournament as a measure to engage with its customers as well as further entrench the sport.

The men winner’s position was Mwariri Nduati playing off handicap 12 with an impressive 41 points taking home 10, 000 worth of airtime Nokia TAB and a trophy. Lady winner was S. M. Patel playing off handicap 20 shot an impressive 39 points to bag 10, 000 worth of airtime a trophy and a Tab.

The men runner up position was picked by John Mureithi playing of handicap 21. He shot 41 points to take home 5000 worth of Safaricom airtime, and a Nokia Lumia phone. Brian Omondi won the junior top honors. Playing off handicap 6 Omondi shot a superb 32 points to take home a tablet and 5000 worth of Safaricom airtime.

Cyllus took home a trophy, 5,000 worth of airtime and a tab. Joseph Wanjohi of Safaricom took the staff prize. Playing off handicap 28 he carded 35 points of 22 and 13 in the first and back nine respectively.

The longest driver men position was won by Amon Ngechu taking home 5,000 worth of airtime, and a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone. Eunice Muthemba playing off Handicap 32 won the ladies longest driver to win 5,000 safaricom airtime, and a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone.

Nearest to the pin title was picked by Watson Burugu who also took home 5,000 airtime a trophy and a Nokia Lumia phone from Safaricom. The best effort position went to David Person playing off handicap 25 he shot 12 points 8 and back nine respectively. The next Safaricom Business golf tour will be staged in Karen Golf and country club.
