SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the third golf major of the year, the United States Open Championship (better known as the U.S. Open), at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 June 2022.

The U.S. Open will be played for the 122nd time, having first been established in 1895. The current reigning champion is Spaniard Jon Rahm, who shot 278 (-6) to win by one stroke ahead of South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen in the 2021 edition in San Diego.

Rahm will look to become the eighth different man to win consecutive U.S. Open titles and is joined in the field by 11 other former champions who are fully exempt from having to qualify: Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Jim Furyk (2003), Dustin Johnson (2016), Martin Kaymer (2014), Brooks Koepka (2017, 2018), Rory McIlroy (2011), Justin Rose (2013), Webb Simpson (2012), Jordan Spieth (2015), Gary Woodland (2019) and Tiger Woods (2000, 2002, 2008).

Yet the qualification process is something that lends a charm and accessibility to the U.S. Open, as explained by John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer for the United States Golf Association (USGA).

“The USGA appreciates the continued worldwide interest in competing in the U.S. Open and we are pleased to offer thousands of golfers an opportunity to follow their dream of playing in a major championship,” said Bodenhamer.

“The U.S. Open is unique in major championship golf in that the qualifying process provides golfers of all ages, races and abilities a chance to play their way into the field. We look forward to welcoming 156 players to the championship and showcasing The Country Club in June.”

The Country Club in Brookline features a par 70, 7,263-yard course. The U.S. Open has previously been contested at The Country Club in 1913, 1963 and 1988, and each championship was decided in a playoff.

In 1988, Curtis Strange won the first of his back-to-back U.S. Open titles when he defeated Nick Faldo by four strokes in an 18-hole playoff. Francis Ouimet (1913) and Julius Boros (1963) also prevailed in 18-hole playoffs.

One of the five founding member clubs of the USGA, The Country Club will host its 17th USGA championship and first since the 2013 U.S. Amateur. The total of 17 USGA championships is tied for second-most all time.

SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the PGA Tour’s  RBC Canadian Open, from the St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto, Ontario from Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 June 2022.

The Canadian Open is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the PGA Tour, after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. It is the only national championship that is a PGA Tour-managed event.

This year marks the return of the RBC Canadian Open, with the tournament cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last edition in 2019, at the Hamilton Country Club in Ontario, was won by Rory McIlroy, who shot 258 (-22) to finish seven strokes ahead of Shane Lowry and Webb Simpson.

McIlroy will return to defend his title this year, but he faces stiff competition from an excellent field of competitors which includes 2022 Masters Tournament champion Scottie Scheffler. “Competing for a national championship is always a great honour and I’m thrilled to be coming to Toronto in June to play in the RBC Canadian Open for the first time,” said the 25-year-old, who became the sixth-youngest player to reach the top spot on golf’s world rankings.

Another player to watch is rising star Cameron Smith. The 28-year-old Australian is enjoying the best season of his career on the PGA Tour and will be one of the favourites for victory at the Canadian Open.

“I’ve heard how much positive momentum there is for the return of the RBC Canadian Open. I’m actually pretty excited to get back to Canada for the first time since 2017 and keen to play St. George’s, which I hear is one of the top courses in the country,” said Smith.

“Similar to back home in Australia, Canada’s golf fans seem really passionate and I’m looking forward to heading up to Toronto in June to compete in their National Open.”

The field will also include Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Tony Finau, Matthew Fitzpatrick and local Canadian favourites such as Bryce Barker, Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin, Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, Adam Svensson, Michael Gligic and Roger Sloan.

The St. George’s Golf and Country Club features a par 71, 7,025-yard course. The purse for the Memorial Tournament is $8.7million.
