Muthaiga defended the  Tannahill Shield tournament in style at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Club after beating the hosts and arch rivals Royal 7-1 on the final and decisive day to finish the tournament on 50 points.
The champions enjoying the services of top amateurs Collins Omondi, Nelson Mudanyi, Ashwin Gidoomal, Kumar Dhall and Mwai Mbuthia made up for their poor start in the tournament, by beating their rivals Royal 7-1 and Sigona 5-3 to make it 10 out of 11 as the 87th edition of the Easter tournament came to an end.
Windsor Golf and Country Club were the last in the pecking order with a maximum of eight points and in the process they were relegated from next year’s event, they would be represented by either Railway Golf Club or Golf Park.
Royal will have to blame themselves for tumbling on the final day after a bright start and they made history by scoring a single point on the last 18th hole on the final day. It would be remembered as
their worst performance in recent years.
“Today was just a bad day in office, you can’t say that we didn’t play, we did our best but things were just not working out for us. All teams played very well and a simple mistake could cause you dearly and that is the consequence we faced,” said Royal Nairobi Golf Club captain Murwithania Mugambi who was part of the host’s team said.
Mugambi said: “It was, however, not about winning the shield alone, there were a lot of positives in this year’s tournaments and it was also very interesting as we witnessed some talent of the highest level beaten by normal golfers and even young golfers were shocked by some old golfers, it was simply fan.”
Royal finished second on 39 points despite the final day backlash, while Vet Lab were third on 38 points and Sigona were fourth on 33 points. Western Kenya finished fifth on 32 points, while Limuru were and Mombasa Sports Club tied on sixth position on 30 points and Karen were eighth on 28 points. air max air max
