SIMWA WINS NYANZA OPEN LEAPS IN GOTY RANKINGS

Nelson Simwa who finished the first day of the Nyanza Open in the second spot, braved a chilly weather to bounce back and emerge the overall winner after the second round on Sunday at the nine hole Nyanza Golf Club.

Simwa managed a score of 73 gross made up of 37 {4, 4, 5, 4, 5, 5, 3, 4, 3} in the first nine while in the second nine he managed a total of 36 gross after amassing 5, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4, 4, and 3.

“Am happy of winning this tournament, this was my first time in Nyanza and I have never played at the Hippo Pot” Simwa said.

William Odera playing off scratch and David Opati also playing off scratch who had managed position 1 and 4 respectively on Saturday tied in the second position on 76 gross.

Kericho Golfer William Odera won the first round of the competition on Saturday where he posted a total of 69 gross after accumulating 35 medal points in the first nine {4, 4, 4, 3, 6, 3, 3, 3, 5} and 34 points in the second nine {4, 4, 4, 3, 5, 3, 3, 4, 5}.

“The course was in good shape, the greens were good and I was patting very well and my entire tee offs were good, this worked to my favor and I intent to capitalize on this and improve so that I win the game today,” said Odera on Sunday.

The open was attended by Kenya Golf Union Chairman Alfred Karioki, Western Region KGU Representative William MacTough, and Phyllis Gachau the East African Cables Marketing and Customer care Manager.

In the second position was Vet Lab Sports club Nairobi Nelson Simwa who managed a total of 71 Gross.

In the first nine he scored 35 in total after amassing 6, 4, 4, 3, 5, 3, 3, 3, and 4 while in the second nine he managed a total of 36 after posting 4, 4, 4, 2, 4, 4, 4, 4, and 6. Railways Golfer Alfred Nandwa came third after managing a total of 72 Gross.

In the first nine Nandwa scored 37, {5, 4, 5, 3, 6, 4, 3, 3, and 4} and in the second nine he managed a total of 35 {5, 3, 4, 3, 5, 4, 4, 3, and 4}.

Golf Park’s Opati and Steve Karanja from Kiambu Golf tied on 73 gross for position 4. Karanja scored 35 and 38 in the first and second nine respectively.

In the fifth position was Dennis Saikwa from Golf Park who managed 74 after accumulating 37 {5, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4, 4, 3} gross in the first nine and 37 {4, 4, 5, 4, 5, 3, 4, 3, 5} in the second.

KALOKI ANCHORS TEAM TO VICTORY IN DASANI’S MACHAKOS LEG

The 15th qualifying round of the 2012 Dasani Golf Gala took place on Saturday 25 August 2012 at the Machakos Golf Club.
Club vice chairman Collins Kaloki anchored his team to a countback victory after  amassing a combined score of 115 points to earn an automatic berth to the Grand Finale slated for September 29 at the Karen Country Club.

Kaloki posted 40 points with Benard Mungata contributing 39 points.  Justice Matei had 37 points while club captain Charles Nzuki  was the team’s weakest link on 35 points.
Speaking about his performance, Nzuki said, “Today I played well but my score was not as good as I expected, I hope to play better at the Grand Finale and help my team book the ticket to Dubai.”

“We really have to train hard now ahead of the finale, because there we will be playing against other very good player,” he added.
The team of Fred Kilonzi, Dee Kivuva, Jackson Nzuki and Larry Wambua also from Machalos, settled for the runners-up position, also amassing a combined score of 115 points, only beaten on countback.
Kilonzi anchored the team with a score of 42, while Nzuki contributed 37 points.Kivuva posted 36 points as Wambua was the team’s weakest link on 34 points.
Thika’s Larry Ngala won the guest after posting 38 points, he also won the nearest to the pin prize, while handicap three Ernest Mwanza posted the men’s longest drive and Jennifer Ngure had the ladies longest drive.
Speaking on behalf of the tournament sponsors, Bobby Macharia of Icon Sports Marketing Limited urged players to use the remaining three qualifiers to book a ticket for the Grand Finale which had a lot in store.

Macharia noted that the grand prize this year will see the winning team of four players travel to Dubai to attend the Grand Finale of the European Tour, the DP World Tour Championships at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. While in Dubai, they will also have the opportunity to see Europe’s top 60 money earners on the 2012 Order of Merit battle it out for a 1.3 million winner’s cheque.
“In addition, they will play at some of the best golf courses in the region, including the Dubai Creek Course and the challenging Faldo Course at the Emirates Golf Club, a course designed by former world number 1 and six-time major Champion Sir Nick Faldo,” said Macharia.
