MUCHAI GATHU WINS INAUGURAL SIGNON GROUP’S GOLF EVENT AT KAREN

OOH YES: Japheth Kagondu reacts after sinking a long putt during the inaugural Signon Group Golf Day at the Karen Golf and Country Club at the weekend.

Mucai Gathu clinched   Signon Group golf tourney over the weekend, beating a full house of seasoned golfers to walk home as the champion of the first of many golf events to be sponsored by the transport logistics and clearing and forwarding company.

Playing off handicap 14, Gathu playing at his home ground started the front nine with an impressive par, but dropped a single shot on the 2nd and 3rd respectively.

He recovered with a par on the fourth, dropped a shot each on the 5th and 6th bounced  back with a par on the 7th before dropping a shot each on the last two holes to finish the nine with 19 points.

At the back Nine Gathu dropped a shot on the 10th, got a level par on the 11th and 12th, dropped a single shot on the 13th and got a two club on the par 3 14th hole.

He dropped a single shot each on the 15th and 16th and romped home with two pars on the 17th and 18th to finish with 21 points.

‘’Am very elated to be here, it was a while since I won any golf tournament, and I am thankful. I played a tactical game, kept my ball on the fairway and am glad it paid off ‘’said Mathu after receiving the winners prize from Signon Group MD Meshack Kipturgo.

Maina Mukoma can in second a single shot from Mucai. The handicap 15 combined 20 at the front nine and 19 at the back for a total of 39 points.

Maina dropped a single shot on the first three holes before recovering with a par on the 4th, he then dropped a single shot on the 5th and 6th came back strong with two pars on the 7th and 8th and finished with a bogey on the 9th for 20points.

At the back nine, bogey on the 10th, he followed it up with two pars, dropped a single shot on the 13th, 14th 15th got a par on the 17th and bogey on the last two holes to finish with 19 points.

Honorable Minister for Information and Technology Samuel Poghishio was third with 39 points beating Salma Mazrui-Watt on count back.

Wesley Koech, David Muriithi and Salma Nazrui-Watt won the two clubs, each of the going home with 27 golf balls.

Ted Macharia got the Nearest to the pin prize awhile Ruth Cheluget and Andrew Gachaga took home the longest drive women and men respectively.

John Wainaina got 21  points on the first nine to clain the prize   for best nine and  Mwangi Muthee took home the Best 2nd nine with 21 points.

NANDI BEARS QUARTET RUN RIOT IN ELDORET

ALL ROUNDER: Two times Boston Marathon winner Moses Tanui follows his tee shot during the 13th leg of the Dasani Golf Gala at the Eldoret Golf Club on Saturday.

The Nandi Bears quartet of Mathew Kioko, James Siahi, Simeon Kurgat and Rael Kurgat posted 108 points, emerging top of the pile at the 13th qualifying round of the Dasani Golf Gala played on Saturday 11 August 2012 at the par 71 Eldoret Golf Club,book an automatic ticket to the Grand Finale slated for Saturday 29 September 2012 at the  Karen Country Club.

The handicap 24 Kioko anchored the winners with an impressive score of 46 points, one of the highest scores registered in this year’s gala, while handicap 22 Simeon Kurgat  and Rael Kurgat contributed 31 points apiece as  handicap 9 Siahi was disqualified.

“Today everything just worked in my favour, I feel very happy because I have never posted such a score in my golf career,even during practice. I thank God for the good score, because like on hole 10 hit the tree twice and the ball kept on returning to the fairway and I ended up being three on, there was also the element of  luck in the whole result,” said Kioko who vowed to push his team mates into training before the finale.

Booking the second slot to the Grand Finale was the home team of Tanvi Shah, Ayush Jethwa, Nauas Sagoo and Deeva Aggarwal with a combined score of 106 points. Shah anchored the team with 40 points, while Jethwa contributed 34 points and Sagoo had 32 points. Aggarwal was the team’s weakest link on 31 points.

The team of H. Rutemba, P. Sashi, S. Kotecha and Shah Niral with be the reserve team after they placed third with a combined score of 101 points.

The day long event brought together players from Eldoret Club, Kitale Club and Nandi Bears.

Bobby Macharia playing off handicap 28 was the guest winner on 44 points, while Karan Manek was the junior prize winner with a score of 34 points ass the club’s assistant captain Tom Mutie won the nearest to the pin prize. James Siahi won the men’s longest drive title, while Deeva Aggarwal claimed the women longest drive prize.

Speaking at the function, Moses Mwirigi, the General Sales Manager Rift Valley Bottlers, poured tribute to all participating teams,and urged the qualifying teams from this round to put up a sterling performance at September’s Grand Finale. He added, “The grand prize this year will see the winning team of four players travel to Dubai to attend the Grand Finale of the European Tour, the DP World Tour Championships at the Jumeirah Golf Estates. While in Dubai, they will also have the opportunity to see Europe’s top 60 money earners on the 2012 Order of Merit battle it out for a 1.3 million winner’s cheque.”

“In addition, they will play at some of the best golf courses in the region, including the Dubai Creek Course and the challenging Faldo Course at the Emirates Golf Club, a course designed by former world number 1 and six-time major Champion Sir Nick Faldo,” said Maina.
