A strong contingent of American golfers are aiming to build on the country’s winning run at the 2021 US Open, one of men’s golf’s four major championships.

An American has won each of the last six US Open tournaments, including last year’s event at Winged Foot Golf Club. Big-hitting Bryson Dechambeau won by six shots for his first major triumph.

South African golf has enjoyed a steady rise in the past year and one of the country’s shooting stars, Garrick Higgo, will make the trip to Torrey Pines fresh off his first PGA Tour win in only his second start.

Higgo held his nerve to take the Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina last weekend and will be among a talented list of foreigners hoping to upset the applecart on American soil.

“It’s amazing,” said Higgo following his maiden PGA Tour win. “I just stayed patient all week. I’ve worked so hard with my coach on my short game and my putting, and I guess all that has paid off.

“Europe and South Africa have been vital in my game getting to where it is now, ” the 22-year-old left-hander added.

“The Sunshine Tour, if it wasn’t for the Sunshine Tour I wouldn’t be here now, so I can’t thank the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour enough for giving us the platform to play.”

South Africa is the fourth most successful country in US Open history with five wins, behind only the United States of America (86), Scotland (13) and England (7).

Gary Player won the US Open in 1965 followed by Ernie Els (1994, 1997) and Retief Goosen (2001,2004). Louis Oosthuizen has come closest to adding his name to the list. He finished third last year and came tied for second in 2015.

Oosthuizen is in good form and also finished tied for second at the PGA Championship earlier this year, won by Phil Mickelson. The first major of 2021, The Masters Tournament, was won by Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
