On form amateur golfer Alfred Nandwa seems set for the East Africa Challenge to be held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia at the end of this month, after winning the Challenge qualifier by three shots at the Thika Sports Club on Tuesday.

The Railway Golf Club player, playing off handicap +1, built on his first two rounds lead to win the 54-hole qualifier on a score of four under par 212 (71, 68, 73).

Former junior champion and Nyali player Daniel Nduva playing off handicap 1 was second on one under par 215 made up of 71 gross in the first round, 73 gross in the second round and 71 in the third and final round.

Third position was shared by Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi and Golf Park’s John Lejirma on three over par 219. Mudanyi playing off scratch had rounds of 71, 73 and 75, while handicap 2 Lejirma returned rounds of 73, 73, 73.

Off scratch players Robinson Owiti of Vet Lab and Simon Njogu of Great Rift Valley Lodge shared the fifth position and on four over par 220 to complete the six slots up for grabs at the qualifier in terms of automatic qualification.

Owiti had rounds of 73, 76 and 71, while Njogu recovered from first round’s poor show to manage rounds of 77, 73 and 70.

Former national team captain Royal’s Kenneth Bollo and Sujan Shah missed the cut by a single shot.

Kenya Golf Union will send a team of eight players to the regional competition, with the remaining two being picked by the union by wild card and the other one would be a junior golfer.
