Over 120 players take to Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s par 72 course to vie for their final berths as the Natural Sweetness Golf Series qualifiers enter the home stretch on Saturday.
This will be the penultimate event of the Mumias Sugar Company-sponsored series before the finals in November.
After a weekend of action in Mumias Golf Club last weekend which added another 10 qualifiers to the finals entry sheet, 12 more slots will be up for grabs this weekend.
In the absence of some of the low handicappers playing this weekend in the Teafields Challenge in Kericho, handicap two Bo Ciera, Paul Ichangi (5) and youngster Jonathan Chebukati will lead the challenge in the lower division (0-5 handicap) with other such exciting players as Vice-captain Jack Okuku, Abner Onsomu, Robert Nyanchoga, Harun Patel, K. S. Syan, D. Muraya and Ben Handa providing a tough contest in the handicap 6-10 category.
The always steady O.M Okeyo, Victor Kidiwa and Martin Mbugua will be some of the players to watch in the 11-15 categories as the usually well attended Royal Golf Club competition provides another exciting day for sponsor and golfers.
A host of other players will compete for slots in the 16-20, 21-25 and 26-36 handicap categories while Mumias Sugar Company Chief Executive, Peter Kebati and Board Member, James Chege, among others, will battle it out for the staff honours on Saturday. Two players qualify from each category in this Kenya Golf Union-sanctioned amateur series.
“We are expecting a really good event this weekend with Mumias coming to Royal Nairobi Golf Club. They are one of the finest sponsors of golf in this country and we feel honoured to host their series,” said Charan Tetthy, Royal Nairobi’s resident professional.
“We have one more qualifier after this to go for the finals and the Royal Nairobi Golf Club event sets the stage for a really good finish as we head to Kisumu for the final qualifier,” said Pamela Lutta, Mumias Sugar Company’s director for Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
The series has already been to various clubs including Kenya Railways Golf Club, Karen Country Club, Thika Sports Club, Limuru Country Club, Sigona Golf Club, Muthaiga Golf Club, Nakuru Golf Club, Vetlab Sports Club and Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort.
