SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic from the Detroit City Golf Club in Michigan from Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 July 2022.

This will be the fourth edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which replaced the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour and is the first event in Tour history to be held completely within the Detroit City limits.

Last year’s champion was Australian Cameron Davis, who shot 270 (-18) before defeating Chilean Joaquin Niemann and American Troy Merritt to take the title.

“It was hectic since the 17th hole,” said Davis after the triumph, his first on the PGA Tour. “I tried to put as much out of my mind as I could and just hit every shot for what it was worth. As simple as that sounds, it’s so hard to do when the pressure is on.”

Davis will be back in Detroit to defend his title against a strong field that includes the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Will Zalatoris, Justin Rose, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler.

“It’s surreal to be back here,” Davis said at the media launch of the 2022 tournament. “It’s so cool to come back to a life-changing place for me. This is where a big step in my career as a golfer took place, and I’m always going to have a special place in my heart for this golf course.”

Jason Langwell, the tournament’s executive director, said that “it’s the best Rocket Mortgage Classic we’ve ever had” in terms of the strength of the field.

In addition, Bob Walters, CEO of Rocket Mortgage, announced that through the Connect 313 Fund, 17 new neighbourhood technology hubs would be opened throughout Detroit neighbourhoods to help ensure that all citizens have adequate access to the internet.

“Last year, the federal government implemented what was referred to as Emergency Broadband Benefit, it was an internet subsidy program for folks that could not afford internet,” explained Walters. “Last year we were able to enrol 82,000 families in less than a year. That was the leading figure in the country”

The Detroit City Golf Club features a 7294-yard, par 72 course. The purse for the Rocket Mortgage Classic is $8.4million.

Preparations for this year’s Victoria Cup are complete. The event which pits rivals Kenya and Uganda will be held at the Limuru Country Club from July 28th to 31^st where each team will be represented by 10 players.

The Kenya Golf Union (KGU) had earlier named 17 players who have been undergoing training under Coach John van Liefland, in preparation for the event. The squad included; Dennis Maara (Limuru), Adel Balala ( Nyali), Jay Sandhu (Muthaiga), John Lejirmah (Railway), Michael Karanga (Kiambu), Sammy Mulama (Golf Park), Ebill Omollo (Vet Lab), and John Kamais (Nakuru), Christopher Andrea ( Ruiru Sports Club). The Juniors are Njoroge Kibugu (Muthaiga, Daniel Kiragu (Muthaiga), Mikael Kihara (Vet Lab), Steve Orinda (Vet Lab), Chrisphine Owuor (Vet Lab), Lee Kimathi (Windsor), Andrew Wahome ( Nyali Golf & Country Club, and Ngondo Kimemia (Sigona.

‘Today, we are pleased to announce the Team of 10 that will represent Kenya in this year’s Victoria Cup.” Said Mr. Njani Ndiritu the Chairman Kenya Golf Union.

Since its inauguration in 2016 Kenya has won the event three times. In 2019, Uganda won the event at Entebbe Golf Club. “We are happy to stage the event once again this year, something we were not able to do in 2020 and 2021 due to the challenges brought about by the Covid 19 Pandemic” added Ndiritu.

Team Kenya will comprise of Adel Balala, Andrew Wahome, Christopher Andrea, Daniel Kiragu, Dennis Maara, Ebill Omollo, John Lejirma, Michael Karanga, Njoroge Kibugu and Sammy Mulama.

Talking from the training Venue – Limuru Country Club, Dennis Maara the team captain oozed confidence as he reassured the country that the team is fully prepared and that they intend to get the trophy back.
