Muthaiga’s long hitting Nicholas Rokoine teed off to a bright start to take an overnight lead after the posting three under par 68 in the first round of the KCB Tour Grand Finale at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.

The early lead is a great boost to Rokoine who is the favourite to win this year’s order of merit as he enjoyed a comfortable lead before the Nyali event. He reigned supreme over a historical large field of 54 regional professionals.

On his way up, Rokoine shot 34 in the front nine and repeated this score in the back nine. He parred the first four holes but went a notch higher with two birdies on preceding holes 5 and 6.

Later on, Rokoine was ecstatic when he sunk an eagle on the par 5 hole 11 though he dropped a shot on the par 4 hole 13.

The reigning order of merit champion Dismas Indiza of Mumias had a round he would like to forget fast. His woes started off when he hit a quadro-bogey on the par 4 hole 9.

“I just saw the ball plunge into the rough and it was really frustrating for me,” recalled Indiza after missing the top ten after the first round. He, however, still has a mathematical chance of retaining the order of merit title.
Thika’s Simon Ngige posted level par upon eclipsing four players (Windsor’s Brian Njoroge, Jacob Okelo, David Wakhu and Rwandese E. Ruterena) by a single shot.
