Barclays Bank yesterday presented a cheque of Ksh 15million sponsorship that is set to go towards the prize kitty of the tournament.

The 45^th Edition of the Barclays Kenya Open Golf Championship returns to the Nairobi Karen Country Club for the third time attracting over 150 players from 26 countries being the highest number in the recent history.

Speaking during the launch event, Barclays Chief Operations Officer Abdi Mohamed re-emphasized the Bank’s commitment to the tournament, and its continued support.  “We are glad to officially launch the 45^th Edition of the 2013 Barclays Kenya Open, a golf tournament we have been part of overtime. We are excited that the 2013 tournament will be bigger and we expect better things going forward.”

Mr Mohamed further added that Barclays’ commitment towards golf over the years has directly helped unearth and nurture the next generation talent in the country. “Our commitment towards nurturing the sport in the region is a reflected through our increase in sponsorship of this event each year and it’s our joy when we see it grow in leaps and bounds.”

He concluded that at least 20 qualifiers of the on-going Barclays Golf Circuit Challenge will get slots to play in the 2013 Barlays Kenya Open Pro-Am events, a true reflection of the Bank’s commitment to develop the sport in the country.

Also speaking during the tournament, Kenya Open Golf Limited Chairman, Mr. Peter Kanyago, thanked Barclays Bank of Kenya for being the title sponsor of the tournament and appreciated their continued support. “The union is honoured to be part of this very significant tournament that is the breeding ground of all our Barclays Kenya Open players.”

Mr. Kanyago added that the Barclays sponsorship creates a foundation to further open opportunities for Kenyan professionals to compete at a world stage.

This year, Kenya will be represented by at least 22 professionals who are members of the Professional Golfers Association of Kenya. The compliment of Kenyans is completed by four amateurs. Other African countries participating are South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

Barclays Kenya Open continues to draw players and spectators from around the region and has had the privilege of showcasing the skills of famous players in years past. Limuru’s Charles Kariuki returned a score of a life time to be crowned the overall winner of this year’s Kenya Power Open Day tournament held at the par 72 Karen Golf and Country Club on Friday.

Kariuki playing off handicap 27 carded an impressive score of 42 stableford points to rule the roast at the daylong tournament.

He had a double bogey on the par five hole three, but recovered to leveled the par four holes eight and nine for a first nine score of 23 points.

In the back nine, Kariuki who claims this was one of his best performances in his golfing career, dropped three shots on the par four hole 13, but recovered with two pars on the par three hole 16 and par five hole 18 for a second nine score of 19 points.

“I had great morning today, I was hitting the balls hard on the fairway and my putting was great. I think I’m now becoming a serious golfer,” said Kariuki.

Sigona’s J. M. Bamrah needed a second nine score of 19 stableford points to beat three other opponents and secure the men winner prize on a total of 36 points. He beat Tom Simba, Ken Mungai and Kenya Open Limited chairman Peter Kanyago on count back.

In the first nine, he leveled par four hole eight to end the front nine on 17 stableford points. In the second nine he had pars on the par four 12^th hole, par five 15^th hole and par five 18^th hole for a total of 19 points.

Tom Simba was the men runner-up also on 36 points and was followed by Mungai in the men third spot and Kanyago scooped the men fourth prize, both with similar scores of 36 points.

Mukami Gatonye of Vet Lab was the lady winner on 40 points. The handicap 12 player had four pars in the first nine where she also sunk a birdie on the par three fifth hole to end the nine on 20 points.

In the second nine, she sunk another birdie on the par five fifteenth hole and posted three pars for another identical score of 20 points. Beatrice Kamau was the lady runner-up on 36 points.

Samson Wisuve won the staff prize on 34 points and was followed by J. Wanyoike on 31 points in the category’s second position.

Mercy Kebaara had the lady’s nearest to the pin, while David Muthike won the men’s nearest to the pin prize. Joyce Gakunda had the women’s longest drive and Tom Mulwa had the men’s longest drive prize. maillot de foot 2018 maillot de foot 2018
