Home player Jason Kariuki resisted stiff competition to emerge the overall winner of this year’s Kenyatta University Foundation Golf Day at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club on Saturday.
Kariuki playing off handicap 17 posted an impressive 23 stableford points in the first nine and 17 stableford points in the back nine for a total of 40 points to rule the roost.
Patrick Mokaya playing off handicap 21 was the men winner on 38 points after he amassed 20 points in the front nine and 18 in the back nine, while Tonny Sahni playing off handicap 13 finished as the men runner-up on 37 points (22, 15). Handicap 17 Samira Furrar was the lady winner on 29 points (16, 13) after beating her closest opponent handicap 16 Grace Kimeria by a single point.
Anthony Kabucho playing off handicap 17 was the guest winner on 33 points (15, 18) and handicap 16 Giri Bhardwaj emerged the junior winner on 37 points (17, 20). Former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya won the first nine prize on 19 points and veteran David Farrar won the second nine prize on 21 points.
During the Foundation’s charity tournament held at the same venue on Friday, F.A. Bisher playing off handicap 22 emerged the men winner after garnering 36 points (13, 23). Wachira Nderitu playing off handicap 13 was the men runner-up on 6 points (14, 22) and handicap seven E.Muriungi finished third on 5 points (18, 17).
Ken Monari playing off handicap 22 was crowned the staff winner on 42 points (21, 21) and E. Khayo playing off handicap 16 became the lady winner on 32 points (15, 17).
According to the Kenyatta University Foundation programme coordinator and chair of the organising committee Rose Otieno, the purpose of the golf tournament was to raise funds for scholarship to support of Orphans and Vulnerable Students (OVS) at the university.
“Currently our student population is over 70,000 spread across various campuses offering different courses. In concurrence with the KU philosophy to be sensitive and responsive to societal needs, and the belief in the right of every person to knowledge, this cause is noble to us,” said Otieno.
Some of the sponsors for the fundraiser include Unicore projectors, Bamburi Cement, EABL, Pan Africa, Savannah Cement, KASNEB, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, Safaricom, UBA Bank, Lavington Security, Intercontinental, Panari Hotel, Sarova Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Lavington Security, Eevent Hub and Nation Media Group.
“Orphans and Vulnerable Students (OVS) face overwhelming challenges: inability to pay fees and subsistence due to poverty, lack of social support, disability and discrimination, gender-based cultural discrimination and being orphaned from disease or natural calamities,” Otieno said.
She added: “ To that effect, availing scholarships is the most direct way of making a difference in the lives and expanding their opportunities, and thus recognizing and reward outstanding academic
achievers who are otherwise disadvantaged. Annually, KU admits more than 3,000 orphans and vulnerable students (OVS) of which the University can only finance 100 scholarships and many deserving applications are turned down. Scholarships for OVS at KU are open to all counties in Kenya, thereby multiplying the overall impact equitably across Kenya at family and community levels.” nike air max cheap wholesale nike air max cheap wholesale
