SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the first golf major of the year, The Masters Tournament, at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 April 2022.

SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Golf fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.

The Masters is widely regarded as one of, if not the most iconic golf tournament in the world. Dating back to 1949 (the tournament was formed in 1934), the Masters presents a sought-after green jacket to its winner each year. In 2021, the man to put on that green jacket was Hideki Matsuyama, who shot a 10 under 278 to end one stroke ahead of Will Zalatoris.

Matsuyama became the first Japanese winner of a Major and established himself as a sporting icon in his home country. “I think Hideki could compare to Ichiro and Sadaharo Oh,” said Nobuhito Sato, a board member of the Japanese Tour, raising the name of two national treasures in trying to explain what a green jacket means in Japan.

Ichiro is the future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and Oh is the all-time leader in home runs in Japanese baseball and a crossover figure who was immortalised in a Beastie Boys lyric.

“I am the first to win a major. If that’s the bar, I’ve set it,” said Matsuyama. “It’s thrilling to think a lot of youngsters in Japan are inspired by my achievement.”

While Matsuyama is hoping to defend his title, the favourites for the 2022 Masters Tournament are Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth, while the likes of Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy are also high up the betting odds.

“I know my good putting days, my great putting days are really good, but it’s just about maintaining those bad ones because I can win golf tournaments with stuff like that,” said Thomas. “So that’s just where I’ve been trying to get it. And Jon [Rahm] is the same way I am. He might be harder on himself than I am on myself.”

He added: “It’s just about just saying, hey, it’s good, we’re moving the right way, we just keep getting one percent better, one percent better, middle of the year, end of the season, that’s going to turn out to be pretty good.”

The Augusta National Golf Club features a 7,475-yard par 72 course. The purse for The Masters Tournament is $11.5million.
