Samuel Munyua emerged the winner of the second round of the 2014/2015 Kenya Airways Golf Safari vanquishing his game adversaries with zest and vigor.
Playing off handicap 22, the home golfer oozed confidence right from the initial stroke and savored 43 stableford points victory on the emerald Limuru Country Club course.
A jubilant Munyua also bagged two return tickets to fly to any KQ destination of choice in Africa courtesy of the national carrier Kenya Airways.
In winning the second tour, Munyua also qualified for the Grand Finale that will be played at Windsor in March.
Also making slots for the Grand Finale from Limuru were men’s winner Peter Mwaura and ladies winner Wamaitha Njoroge.
Munyua joins the list of winner which also has Benson Kimani Macharia who won the opening round at Railways Nairobi the previous weekend.
Wamaitha playing off handicap 21 carded 36points whilst Mwaura (handicap 11) shot 39stableford points.
Munyua was all smiles after victory. “It was quite an eventful day. The greens were in awesome condition and I was really happy with my hitting skills on the day,” said Munyua.
The men’s runners up trophy went to handicap 16 Kangethe Ndiho on a score of 38points. Ndiho also won himself a three wheel trolley.
Handicap 4 golfer James Kimani shot 38points to finish third losing the second slot to Ndiho on countback. Handicap 19 Grace Gichuki was the ladies’s’ runner up on a score of 35points.
Nearest to the pin honors went to F Wahome. D Maara and Edna Kimurwa ran away with the longest drive trophy for men and ladies respectively.
Limuru tour attracted 260 golfers including guest players and club members.
KQ Finance Director Alex Mbugua said golf tourism is a big industry globally with revenues estimated at more than US$ 2Million.
“There is a huge opportunity in supporting the development of this sub-sector in Africa. This is one of the objectives of the Kenya Airways Golf Safari 2014/15. Kenya Airways is holding the Golf championship dubbed Golf Safari for 5 months in a larger format as compared to previous years that would see the inclusion of more clubs and players to meet the growing popularity of the sport,” Mbugua said.
The third round of the Kenya Airways Safari moves to Windsor this Saturday with over 200 golfers lined up for action.
On Friday, the second round of the international schedule (which started in Ghana last weekend) moves to the Royal Harare Golf Club.
